Boulders as functional microrefugia: Quantifying a continental-like microclimate supporting Pinus cembra at its oceanic range margin

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science
Climatic microrefugia allow some forest tree species to persist outside their main distribution range by locally decoupling site conditions from the regional climate.

Where were the Caribbean mangroves during the Last Glacial Maximum? A preliminary microtopographical appraisal [PDF]

open access: yes
During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), when global sea levels dropped by ∼132 m, the Caribbean continental shelf was fully exposed, which drastically reduced the flat topographical habitat necessary for mangrove growth.

Nearby woody patches and microtopography reduce grass dieback during extreme drought

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Extreme droughts related to climate change can be a driver of habitat transition by affecting the survival and reproduction of dominant plant species, while different microrefugia can buffer against this.

The Distribution of Cool Spots as Microrefugia in a Mountainous Area

open access: yesThe Distribution of Cool Spots as Microrefugia in a Mountainous Area
It has recently been proposed that microrefugia played an important role in species survival during past climate change events. However, the current distributions of microrefugia remain largely unknown. Wind-hole sites are areas affected by preferential flows of cool air generated in interstitial spaces created by rock fragments or colluvia.

Assessing the Distribution and Stability of Groundwater Climatic Refugia: Cliff-Face Seeps in the Pacific Northwest

open access: yes
Microrefugia can be critical in mediating biological responses to climate change, but the location and characteristics of these habitats are often poorly understood.
