“Möbius” microring resonator [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 2019
A category of optical microring resonator, which is analogous to the Möbius strip, is proposed. The “Möbius” microring resonator allows the conversion between modes with different polarizations in the ring, and light must circulate two cycles to be converted back to the original polarization status, which is similar to a Möbius strip.

Optical isolation using microring modulators

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2021
Optical isolators, while commonplace in bulk and fiber optical systems, remain a key missing component in integrated photonics. Isolation using magneto-optic materials has been difficult to integrate into complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication platforms, motivating the use of other paths to effective non-reciprocity such as temporal

Supersymmetric microring laser arrays [PDF]

open access: yesPhotonics Research, 2019
Coherent combination of emission power from an array of coupled semiconductor lasers operating on the same chip is of fundamental and technological importance. In general, the nonlinear competition among the array supermodes can entail incoherence and spectral broadening, leading to spatiotemporally unstable and multimode emission pattern and thus poor

Adiabatic microring modulators

open access: yesOptics Express, 2012
In this work, we demonstrate and experimentally characterize a new class of high-performance silicon photonic modulators-the adiabatic microring modulator. The adiabatic microring modulator utilizes a vertical PN junction and interior electrical contacts, leveraging all the advantages of previously-demonstrated microdisk modulators.

Modular microring laser cavity sensor

open access: yesOptics Express, 2021
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a modular microring laser (MML) cavity for sensing applications. The proposed MML permits much more design freedom compared with a traditional simple ring cavity by decoupling the performance parameters into several regions in the cavity.

PT-symmetric microring laser-absorber [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2014
The lasing and coherent perfect absorption (CPA) properties of PT-symmetric microrings with mixed index and gain gratings, externally coupled to a bus waveguide, are theoretically investigated. For a complex grating at the PT-symmetry breaking point, perfect unidirectional (either clockwise or counterclockwise) laser emission can be realized, but the ...

Cascadable excitability in microrings

open access: yesOptics Express, 2012
To emulate a spiking neuron, a photonic component needs to be excitable. In this paper, we theoretically simulate and experimentally demonstrate cascadable excitability near a self-pulsation regime in high-Q-factor silicon-on-insulator microrings. For the theoretical study we use Coupled Mode Theory.
