Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...

Effect of Fabrication Process Parameters on the Size of Gelatin/Nanohydroxyapatite Microspheres [PDF]

open access: yesعلوم و تکنولوژی پلیمر, 2009
Nano-hydroxyapatite/gelatin (nHA/Ge) microspheres are currently used in bone tissue engineering as bone filler. In this  study, the effect of fabrication process parameters on the particle size of nano-hydroxyapatite/gelatinmicrospheres was investigated.

Host‐Directed Biomaterials for Combatting Bloodstream Infections: From Macrocyclic Peptides to Immune‐Activating Cell Backpacks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bloodstream infections (BSI) are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in both civilian and military populations. This paper summarizes recent progress in novel treatment strategies to manage BSI arising from both bacterial and fungal pathogens using molecules, particles, and materials to elicit host‐directed immunity.

The Composition and Origin of PM1-2 Microspheres in High-Calcium Fly Ash from Pulverized Lignite Combustion

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
This article presents the results of a systematic study on the composition and origin of PM1-2 microspheres in high-calcium fly ash. The composition of individual microspheres was studied by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray ...

Flexible Microsphere-Embedded Film for Microsphere-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2017
Dielectric microspheres with extraordinary microscale optical properties, such as photonic nanojets, optical whispering-gallery modes (WGMs), and directional antennas, have drawn interest in many research fields. Microsphere-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (MERS) is an alternative approach for enhanced Raman detection by dielectric microstructures ...

Ionic Control of Microstructure and Lubrication in Charged, Physically Cross‐Linked Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, charged, physically cross‐linked poly(methacrylamide‐co‐methacrylic acid) hydrogels stabilized by a short‐range attractive, long‐range repulsive potential is investigated. This work uncovers how salt addition alters not only swelling, but also the microstructure and dynamics, near‐surface stiffness and charge, and ultimately, its lubricity. Salts

Highly efficient optical power transfer to whispering-gallery modes by use of a symmetrical dual-coupling configuration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We report that greater than 99.8% optical power transfer to whispering-gallery modes was achieved in fused-silica microspheres by use of a dual-tapered-fiber coupling method.

Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

Slipping friction of an optically and magnetically manipulated microsphere rolling at a glass-water interface

open access: yes, 2008
The motion of submerged magnetic microspheres rolling at a glass-water interface has been studied using magnetic rotation and optical tweezers combined with bright-field microscopy particle tracking techniques.
