Perspectives: Evolutions with Microstructure

2021
In this chapter we proceed with some examples towards unexplored regions, where the description of the motion as a geometric evolution of sets is partial, and we have to take into account the evolution of some type of microstructure.

Microstructure development and evolution

International Conference on Simulation of Semiconductor Processes and Devices, 2003. SISPAD 2003., 2003
We employ a level set-based geometry tracking software using a "grain continuum" representation, together with models for selected IC manufacturing processes and for microstructural evolution to study the development of grain structures. We consider electroless deposition, physical vapor deposition and grain boundary migration during curvature-driven ...

Coupling Microstructure Characterization with Microstructure Evolution

2010
Microstructure reconstruction in 3D and quantitative digital representation are enabling consideration of polycrystalline and multi-phase microstructures in mechanics codes in a realistic way. To take full advantage of these advances, we discuss in this chapter the synergy of coupling quantitative microstructure characterization by experimental imaging

Coherent islands and microstructural evolution

Physical Review B, 1993
Strained island growth in lattice-mismatched epitaxial systems differs from relaxed island growth. The total elastic energy of a strained island changes its chemical potential and growth rate. This effect is investigated for an ensemble of misfitting coplanar hemispherical caps interacting through surface diffusion alone.

Microstructure evolution during irradiation

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1994
Abstract Microstructural evolution in metals and alloys during energetic particle irradiation is reviewed with emphasis placed on the underlying defect reaction processes. The microstructures produced by electron irradiation with a high-voltage electron microscope, fusion-neutron irradiation with a D-T fusion neutron source, fission-neutron ...

Multiscale Modeling of Precipitate Microstructure Evolution

Physical Review Letters, 2002
We demonstrate how three "state-of-the-art" techniques may be combined to build a bridge between atomistics and microstructure: (1) first-principles calculations, (2) a mixed-space cluster expansion approach, and (3) the diffuse-interface phase-field model. The first two methods are used to construct the driving forces for a phase-field microstructural

Microscale Simulation of Martensitic Microstructure Evolution

Physical Review Letters, 2004
A new model for the evolution of multivariant martensitic microstructure in single crystals and polycrystals is developed. In contrast with Landau-Ginzburg models, which are limited in practice to nanoscale specimens, this new scale-free model is valid for length scales greater than 100 nm and without an upper bound.

Microstructural Evolution in Inhomogeneous Elastic Media

Journal of Computational Physics, 1997
A numerical method based on boundary integrals is developed to study the diffusional evolution of microstructures produced by solid state diffusional transformations in elastically stressed binary alloys in two dimensions. The precipitate and matrix phases are isotropic and linearly elastic.

Microstructural Evolution in Nanocrystalline Ni Coatings

Journal of Materials Research, 2002
Gas-atomized Ni powders were mechanically milled under liquid nitrogen and subsequently sprayed using a high-velocity oxygen-fuel thermal spraying system. The resultant coatings were evaluated using various analytical methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM ...
