Femtosecond Single‐ and Double‐Pulse Fabrication of Periodic Nanostructures on Stainless Steel for Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Periodic submicron features are fabricated on 304 stainless steel using single and double femtosecond laser pulses. By adjusting polarization, fluence, and inter‐pulse delay, 1D and 2D nanostructures are formed. Enhanced hydrophobicity and dense surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy hotspots enable analyte detection down to 10−10 M with good ...

Sensitivity-Tunable Temperature SPR Sensor Based on Side-Opening Grapefruit Fiber With Liquid Mixture

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2022
We demonstrate a sensitivity-tunable temperature SPR sensor based on side-opening grapefruit fiber. The opening sections of the fiber are coated with gold layer and then filled with a liquid mixture of ethanol and chloroform as the sensing medium.

Mechanical and Microstructural Effects of ZrO2 Nanoparticles in Fe20Cr Oxide Dispersion‐Strengthened Alloys Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of oxide nanoparticle synthesis route and concentration on microstructure and high‐temperature performance of additively manufactured oxide dispersion‐strengthened steels is investigated. Comparing laser‐generated and chemically synthesized ZrO2 nanoparticles, the study reveals how dispersion quality, crystal structure and particle size ...

Impact of core cladding boundary shape on the waveguide properties of hollow core microstructured fibers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper we consider an interaction between the air core modes of hollow core waveguide microstructures and core cladding boundary walls in various shapes. The analysis is based on well established models such as the anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide model and on the models proposed for the first time.

Development of Aluminum Scandium Alloys for Hydrogen Storage Valves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Different aluminum alloy series and various aluminum‐scandium alloys with differing Sc and Zr levels are evaluated for use in hydrogen storage valve production. The alloys undergo hardness testing, optical microscopy, and tensile strength analysis, with hardening behavior studied under varying conditions.

The effect of the spin and orbital parts of the Poynting vector on light localization in solid core microstructured optical fibers [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
The optical properties of solid core microstructured optical fibers (SC MOFs) have been studied for a long time. The process of energy outflow of the core modes has always been associated with the process of constructive interference of the core modes fields under reflection from the photonic crystal cladding. In this paper, we want to offer a new look

Passive Temperature-Compensating Technique for Microstructured Fiber Bragg Gratings [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Sensors Journal 8, 7 (2008) 1073-1078, 2010
The thermal drift of the characteristic wavelength of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) photowritten in the core of microstructured fibers (MOFs) is significantly reduced by inserting a liquid of suitable refractive index into their holes. For instance, the spectral range of variations is divided by a factor of 4 over a temperature range larger than 20 ...

Combining Metal Additive Manufacturing and Casting Technology: High Performance Cooling Channels for Electric Powertrain Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
When realized as inserts in high‐pressure die casting, aluminum cooling channels for electric powertrain components and similar applications typically require a stabilizing filler to survive the process. The present study investigates relinquishing this filler using additively manufactured inserts promising performance improvements.

Material effects in airguiding photonic bandgap fibers [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Opt. Soc. Am. B. 20, 2046 (2003)., 2003
The waveguiding properties of two silica-based airguiding photonic bandgap fiber designs are investigated with special emphasis on material effects. The nonlinear coefficients are found to be 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than those obtained in index-guiding microstructured fibers with large mode areas.
