Nonlinear absorption of intense microwave pulses

Free-electron lasers in the electron cyclotron frequency range have been proposed as an efficient means of heating and driving current in tokamak plasmas. The proposed free-electron laser will have short pulses (approx. =5 x 10/sup -8/ sec) with a peak power of (4--8) x 10Z W and electric fields within the plasma in the range 10V--10W V/cm.

The Absorption of Microwaves by Gases

The absorption by ammonia of electromagnetic waves having a length in the one-centimeter range has been known for some years. An investigation has been made to determine whether other gases show similar absorption for microwaves and as a result fourteen additional gases have been found whose absorption is comparable to that of ammonia.

Microwave absorption phenomena have been investigated in single crystals of the rare-earth metals Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, at frequencies of 9.44 and 35.3 Gc/sec over the temperature range 10° to 290°K. Microwave absorption occurs at the critical field transitions for the antiferromagnetic phase.

A spectrometer has been built to perform Doppler-free saturated absorption experiments in the millimeter range (30–300 GHz); a plane-cylindrical resonator between Stark plates has been used. Critical Slowing-Down in Microwave Absorptive Bistability

In this experiment one utilizes a microwave confocal open resonator in the transmission configuration, having a Q factor of 5 105. The resonator is filled with ammonia gas at the pressure of 1 mTorr. A klystron oscillator, frequency stabilized on the 3-3 ammonia inversion line, feeds the resonator which is tuned at the same frequency.
