Precipitation Estimation from the Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS)

open access: yesAdvances in Global Change Research, 2020
The Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) has been the NOAA official operational microwave retrieval algorithm since 2007 and is run operationally on multiple microwave satellite/sensor systems. The algorithm is based on a 1-dimensional variational (1-DVAR) methodology, in which the fundamental physical attributes affecting the microwave ...

NOAA Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) Cloud Liquid Water Retrieval and Assessment

open access: yes2018 IEEE 15th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad), 2018
The NOAA Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) has been implemented operationally at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 2007 and has been generating environmental data records (i.e. satellite products) for many satellites that contain microwave sensors.

Evaluation of Total Precipitable Water Trends From Reprocessed MiRS SNPP ATMS Observations, 2012–2021

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Total precipitable water (TPW) is defined as the vertically integrated column water vapor from the earth's surface to the top of the atmosphere. TPW is a key element of the hydrological cycle and is responsive to changes in global climate related ...

Mesenchymal stem cells-derived extracellular vesicles containing miR-378a-3p inhibit the occurrence of inflammatory bowel disease by targeting GATA2. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Cell Mol Med, 2022
Abstract This study sought to determine whether mesenchymal stem cells‐derived extracellular vesicles (MSCs‐EVs) carrying microRNA‐378a‐3p (miR‐378a‐3p) could affect the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by regulating the GATA‐binding protein 2 (GATA2)/aquaporin‐4 (AQP4)/peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α (PPAR‐α) axis ...

The Loss of an Orphan Nuclear Receptor NR2E3 Augments Wnt/β-catenin Signaling via Epigenetic Dysregulation that Enhances Sp1-β catenin-p300 Interactions in Hepatocellular Carcinoma. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
NR2E3, a nuclear receptor, activates p53 during liver injury, but its role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear. Low NR2E3 expression in HCC is associated with poor outcomes and heightened Wnt/β‐catenin signaling. NR2E3 loss accelerates HCC with increased Wnt/β‐catenin activity, highlighting its novel tumor suppressor function in HCC.

The Challenge of Surface Type Changes Over the Aral Sea for Satellite Remote Sensing of Precipitation

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2022
Frequent false signals of precipitation in satellite passive microwave retrievals over the Aral Sea have been identified as being caused by an outdated surface database. The database includes the surface type, elevation, and the percentage of the primary

The impact of upgrading the background covariance matrices in NOAA Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MIRS) (Conference Presentation)

open access: yesRemote Sensing of Clouds and the Atmosphere XXI, 2016
The NOAA Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) retrieves the atmospheric profiles of state variables (temperature, moisture, liquid cloud, hydrometeors, surface emissivity spectrum and skin temperature) simultaneously and coherently with one-dimension Variational (1DVar) method based on passive microwave radiance observation from multiple polar ...

PCSSR‐DNNWA: A Physical Constraints Based Surface Snowfall Rate Retrieval Algorithm Using Deep Neural Networks With Attention Module

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 50, Issue 13, 16 July 2023., 2023
Abstract Global surface snowfall rate estimation is crucial for hydrological and meteorological applications but is still a challenging task. A novel approach is developed to comprehensively use passive microwave, infrared data and physical constraints in deep‐learning neural networks with an attention module for retrieving surface snowfall rate (PCSSR‐

Understanding sources of Northern Hemisphere uncertainty and forecast error in a medium‐range coupled ensemble sea‐ice prediction system

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 148, Issue 747, Page 2877-2902, July 2022 Part B., 2022
Environment and Climate Change Canada's Global Ensemble Prediction System is now a coupled atmosphere, ocean and sea ice system. This paper examines our now probabilistic forecast skill for sea ice using the Spatial Probability Score (SPS) for the probability of sea ice.
