Characterization of Rape Field Microwave Emission and Implications to Surface Soil Moisture Retrievals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In the course of Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission calibration and validation activities, a ground based L-band radiometer ELBARA II was situated at the test site Puch in Southern Germany in the Upper Danube Catchment.

Coagulative Granular Hydrogels with an Enzyme Catalyzed Fibrin Network for Endogenous Tissue Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Coagulative granular hydrogels are composed of packed thrombin‐functionalized microgels that catalyze the conversion of fibrinogen into a secondary fibrin network, filling the interstitial voids. This bio‐inspired approach stabilizes the biomaterial to match the robustness of bulk hydrogels without compromising injectability, mimicking the initial ...

Validation of a Low-Cost Open-Ended Coaxial Probe Setup for Broadband Permittivity Measurements up to 6 GHz

open access: yesSensors
This work presents the validation of a low-cost measurement system based on an open-ended coaxial SMA (SubMiniature version A) probe for the characterization of complex permittivity in the microwave frequency range.

A new baseband measurement system for characterization of memory effects in nonlinear microwave devices

open access: yes, 2012
This paper presents a new measurement setup for characterization of memory effects in microwave devices. The proposed setup extends the standard LSNA to capture the baseband spectrum from DC up to 100 MHz. This enables characterizations of memory effects

Observation of Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization with BICEP [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP) is a bolometric polarimeter that has been optimized to target the B-mode of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization at degree angular scales, which is a sensitive probe of the ...

Design and Synthesis of Peptide‐Polyester Conjugates for Cell‐Mediated Scaffold Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work describes polycaprolactone (PCL)‐based biomaterials engineered to degrade in response to cell‐secreted proteases. A fast‐degrading peptide (Fast) sequence is integrated into a PCL conjugate backbone to produce a biomaterial that is selectively degraded by multiple cell types compared to its scrambled control (ScrFast).

Multidimensional Cellular Micro‐Compartments to Model Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Dormancy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is an understudied subtype of breast cancer that is susceptible to late recurrences. In this study, micro‐compartmentalization techniques spanning multiple dimensions, including 2D, pseudo‐3D, and 3D, are integrated to uncover the mechanisms underlying ILC dormancy, revealing the central role of p27Kip1.

Errors and uncertainties in microwave link rainfall estimation explored using drop size measurements and high-resolution radar data

open access: yes, 2010
Microwave links can be used for the estimation of path-averaged rainfall by using either the path-integrated attenuation or the difference in attenuation of two signals with different frequencies and/or polarizations.

Water Permeates and Plasticizes Amorphous Carbon Dots: Unraveling the Inner Accessibility of the Nanoparticles by Glass Transition Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The water permeability of amorphous carbon dots (CDs) is demonstrated by investigating their plasticization. Novel polyamide‐based and amorphous nanoparticles are synthesized by controlling their inner packing density. Water plasticization is evidenced by the decrease of the CDs glass transition temperature with increasing the hydration degree.
