Microzooplankton feeding behaviour: grazing on the microbial and the classical food web of African soda lakes [PDF]

open access: yesHydrobiologia, 2012

Insights into the effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton and microzooplankton at a basin scale: diversity, assembly mechanisms, and co-occurrence networks

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Mastering the characteristics of planktonic microbial communities under the influence of basin-scale environmental factors can provide scientific basis to develop more targeted protection and restoration measures. Here, an environmental DNA metabarcoding

Influence of the Calcium Carbonate Shell of Coccolithophores on Ingestion and Growth of a Dinoflagellate Predator

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Coccolithophores are an important group of ∼200 marine phytoplankton species which cover themselves with a calcium carbonate shell called “coccosphere.” Coccolithophores are ecologically and biogeochemically important but the reason why they calcify ...

Assimilation of machine‐learning‐predicted nitrate to improve the quality of phytoplankton forecasting in the shelf‐sea environment

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This article demonstrates that assimilating machine‐learning‐derived surface nitrate can improve five‐day phytoplankton forecast substantially within the Met Office operational system for the Northwest European Shelf. We explain the reasons behind this improvement and propose that an online system where machine learning and data assimilation are cycled

Spring plankton dynamics in the Eastern Bering Sea, 1971-2050 : mechanisms of interannual variability diagnosed with a numerical model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A new planktonic ecosystem model was constructed for the Eastern Bering Sea based on observations from the 2007-2010 BEST/BSIERP (Bering Ecosystem Study/Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program) field program.

Tintinnid ciliates (marine microzooplankton) of the Ross Sea

open access: yesPolar Research, 2022
For the Ross Sea, the only Marine Protected Area in Antarctica, available data on the tintinnid ciliates of the marine microzooplankton are mostly limited to nearshore waters near Terra Nova Bay or the vicinity of the McMurdo Sound. Here, we report results from a geographically extensive sampling across the Ross Sea conducted in December 2020. Material

Can manipulative parasites modify host‐mediated trophic effects? Experimental evidence from Schistocephalus solidus and three‐spined sticklebacks

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Parasites can alter host traits, thereby reshaping host interactions and modifying density‐ and trait‐mediated effects in trophic cascades. But despite increasing research in parasite ecology, the cascading effects of parasitism from individual hosts to population and ...

Ocean odours [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The ocean's distinctive smell is caused by a single chemical released by plankton and other marine life, dimethyl sulphide (DMS). A study by a group of investigators from the University of Groningen used a technique called laser-sheet particle image ...

Generalized Lévy walks and the role of chemokines in migration of effector CD8+ T cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Chemokines have a central role in regulating processes essential to the immune function of T cells, such as their migration within lymphoid tissues and targeting of pathogens in sites of inflammation.

Major contribution of prokaryotes to carbon fluxes in the pelagic microbial food webs of the Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesAdvances in Oceanography and Limnology, 2016
In this study, we carried out dilution experiments at the surface and in the mesopelagic and bathypelagic layers at 15 sites in the Mediterranean Sea that covered a wide range of trophic conditions.
