Seismic Stratigraphy of Eocene–Recent Mixed Depositional Systems on the SE New Zealand Continental Margin, Great South Basin

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
The continental margin of SE New Zealand is strongly influenced by the Southland Current and associated water masses. This new seismic stratigraphic study of the margin has revealed a range of depositional mounds and erosional channels that document the close interaction of turbidity and bottom currents in shaping the margin from the Mid‐Eocene onward.

Dust Deposition and Loess Accretion in New Zealand's South Island: Examining Links between Cold‐Climate Processes and Dust Production

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
We compared temporal variability in dust and loess accretion in New Zealand's South Island with glacial activity in the central Southern Alps, considered the main mechanism of silt production, in (i) a proximal loess deposit at Barrhill, Rakaia River and (ii) a distal dust record from a peat mire in Central Otago.

Mantle Xenolith Evidence for Lithospheric Thinning and Metasomatic Modification Beneath the Eastern Fiji Plateau: Implications for Samoan Plume Supply, Intraplate Volcanism, and Orocline Formation

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
We provide petrographic and geochemical characterisation of mantle xenoliths from Koro Island, eastern Fiji. Several lherzolite xenoliths display spinel–pyroxene symplectite textures, including preserved former grain boundaries, consistent with garnet breakdown that we attribute to thinning of a preexisting garnet‐facies lithospheric mantle beneath ...

Temporal variation of particle flux in the Seychelles–Chagos Thermocline Ridge region of the western Indian Ocean (2022–2024): Links to the Indian Ocean Dipole and El Niño–Southern Oscillation

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2026.
Abstract The Seychelles–Chagos Thermocline Ridge is an upwelling region in the western Indian Ocean, but its role in sinking particle flux remains unclear. We present sediment trap records (July 2022 to June 2024) at 1000 and 2500 m to reveal variations in particle flux and composition.

Development of a moored radium in situ sampler to measure annual time series

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Radium is a useful tracer of sediment‐derived materials, improving our understanding of the geochemical cycling of elements at ocean boundaries. We have developed an autonomous in situ sampler to collect time series samples of radium isotopes on mooring deployments.

Modeling soil moisture from rainfall: An evaluation of the diagnostic soil moisture equation

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, Volume 25, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Abstract The diagnostic soil moisture equation (DSME), which estimates soil moisture from antecedent precipitation, can be used to gap‐fill and extend existing in situ records. We train and evaluate the DSME at 157 Soil Climate Analysis Network and 113 US Climate Reference Network (USCRN) stations across the contiguous United States.
