Effects of expansive force on the differentiation of midpalatal suture cartilage in rats

In an attempt to clarify the effects of biomechanical tensional force on chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation of secondary cartilage, the midpalatal sutures of 4-week-old Wistar male rats were expanded by orthodontic wires which applied 20 g force for 4, 7, 10, and 14 days.

A light microscopic investigation of the human midpalatal suture.

Biopsy samples of the human midpalatal suture, obtained from patients (age range: 10 and 30 yrs), were embedded in resin, cut with ultramicrotome and analyzed at light microscopy. The sutural connective tissue was made up of fibroblasts, collagen fibers, capillaries and nerve fibers.

Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion by opening the midpalatal suture

The results of surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion by opening of the midpalatal suture in 25 patients are reported. Osteotomy of the lateral wall of the maxilla combined with pterygomaxillary dysjunction and midpalatal suture separation allowed for successful rapid maxillary expansion in 23 patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether opening of the midpalatal suture occurs during treatment of posterior cross-bites by means of a Porter or W appliance. In eight of the ten cases treated there was radiographic evidence of midpalatal suture opening.
