Protected area characteristics that help waterbirds respond to climate warming. [PDF]
Abstract Protected area networks help species respond to climate warming. However, the contribution of a site's environmental and conservation‐relevant characteristics to these responses is not well understood. We investigated how composition of nonbreeding waterbird communities (97 species) in the European Union Natura 2000 (N2K) network (3018 sites ...

Recommendations for Improving the Modeling of Wintering Waterbird Population Sizes and Trends. [PDF]
We assessed four statistical approaches (simple GLMM, optimized GLMM, LORI, and TRIM) for analyzing International Waterbird Census data and found that commonly used methods inadequately address zero inflation, overdispersion, and spatial autocorrelation.

Benefits of protected areas for nonbreeding waterbirds adjusting their distributions under climate warming. [PDF]
Abstract Climate warming is driving changes in species distributions and community composition. Many species have a so‐called climatic debt, that is, shifts in range lag behind shifts in temperature isoclines. Inside protected areas (PAs), community changes in response to climate warming can be facilitated by greater colonization rates by warm‐dwelling

Exposure of wetlands important for nonbreeding waterbirds to sea-level rise in the Mediterranean. [PDF]
Abstract Sea‐level rise (SLR) is expected to cause major changes to coastal wetlands, which are among the world's most vulnerable ecosystems and are critical for nonbreeding waterbirds. Because strategies for adaptation to SLR, such as nature‐based solutions and designation of protected areas, can locally reduce the negative effects of coastal flooding

Bolivian migrants in Brazil are commonly categorised as ‘indians’ who are ‘enslaved’ in São Paulo's garment industry. Simultaneously, self‐identified indigenous peoples in Brazilian urban centres are constantly challenged as to the authenticity of their claims to indigeneity.

Abstract This paper presents findings based on over 40 hrs of rich, phenomenological narrative interview data in which five Syrian refugees describe their experiences of transitioning to a new life in Brazil. Using the Social Identity Model of Identity Change (SIMIC) as a framework for examining the relationship between a period of vulnerability ...

Evidence for seasonal cycles in deep‐sea fish abundances: A great migration in the deep SE Atlantic?
The authors demonstrate a significant correlation between epipelagic primary production and deep‐sea fish abundances at 1,500 m from 2010 to 2016 on the Angola margin. These findings highlight the importance of upper‐ocean processes to deep‐sea ecosystem functioning, and their potential vulnerability to future change.

Tough fishing and severe seasonal food insecurity in Amazonian flooded forests
Abstract Billions of people rely on harvesting wildlife for food, and must contend with catch rates that vary in space (e.g. overharvesting near communities) and time (e.g. seasonal migrations). Yet, research has overlooked potential linkages between reduced wildlife catch rates (catch‐per‐unit‐effort) and food security.

As migrações internacionais no século XXI exigem um olhar que contemple a diversidade de processos, heterogeneidade e modalidades migratórias (WENDEN, 2001) em curso. Entre elas, as migrações internacionais qualificadas (PEIXOTO, 1998).
