Migratory birds are lighter coloured
Current Biology, 2021Migratory birds undertake long and challenging journeys that have selected for a suite of adaptations from sensory mechanisms that facilitate orientation to extreme feats of endurance that push physiological limits. Recent work on two distantly related species revealed that migrating individuals increase their flight altitude dramatically during the ...

Migratory birds need coordinated protection
Science, 2016In January, THE Supreme Court of Pakistan lifted the hunting ban on Houbara bustards ([ 1 ][1]), a bird categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Vulnerable ([ 2 ][2]). Frustrating ecologists and environmental groups, the local government argued that lifting the ban has economic benefits and direct bearing on foreign ...

Bird politics are a function of the migratory nature of many species, and of the fascination which they have long held for man. The first characteristic means that many bird protection issues cannot be localised. Concerns traverse national frontiers. Groups in one country are drawn to seeking policy solutions in the internal land-use affairs of other ...

Conservation of Migratory Birds
2003It is increasingly evident that conservation is unlikely to make much progress without being clearly oriented to explicit objectives. In this approach, audit defines priorities because resources are scarce and need to be focused. Targets can be set for individual species or for habitats and are approached by way of planned actions.

EXCRETION OF DDT BY MIGRATORY BIRDS
Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1967Starlings fed 4.75 mg radioactive DDT per day for 5 days absorbed less than 25% of the insecticide. Concentrations remained high in the body and liver for 1 week after the feeding period, but decreased more quickly in the brain. After 10 days, less than 10% of the ingested DDT remained in the birds.

MIGRATORY BIRDS CAN USE A DRINK
Journal of Experimental Biology, 2004![Figure][1] Migration can be quite a challenge for birds traversing large oceans or vast deserts. Many migrants fatten up before they start their journey. Still, especially small birds also need to refuel once they are underway.

Genetic control of migratory behaviour in birds
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 1991Although it has long been suspected that biannual migration in birds has a direct genetic basis, only in the last decade have details of the inheritance of behavioural traits such as migratory activity and directional preferences been demonstrated. A model has now been developed to estimate how inexperienced first-time migrants manage to reach their ...
