Killing Two Birds with One Stone: How an Incidental Take Permit Program under the MBTA Can Help Companies and Migratory Birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), it is unlawful to kill a migratory bird “by any means, or in any manner” without a permit. The United States has interpreted the language “by any means, or in any manner” to include the incidental killing of ...

Spatial and temporal variation in population trends in a long-distance migratory bird [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Over the past three decades, evidence has been growing that many Afro-Palaearctic migratory bird populations have suffered sustained and severe declines.

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

Population estimates and land cover use of wintering Mountain Plovers in Texas

open access: yesJournal of Field Ornithology
Conservation of migratory birds throughout the full annual cycle requires a comprehensive understanding of abundance and distribution in interconnected breeding, migration, and wintering habitats.

Development of lateralization of the magnetic compass in a migratory bird [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The magnetic compass of a migratory bird, the European robin (Erithacus rubecula), was shown to be lateralized in favour of the right eye/left brain hemisphere.

Assessing the potential of large-scale urban forest projects as a natural climate solution

open access: yesNature-Based Solutions
Urban forests are considered a nature-based solution for climate change by cities and countries worldwide. However, the effectiveness of large-scale urban forest projects as a natural climate solution has been rarely assessed.

Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Assessing variation in the perception of urban ecosystem services at the sub-city level

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban Sustainable Development
Assessing residents’ perceptions of urban ecosystem services (UESs) is crucial for incorporating it into environmental management. However, evaluations seldom consider variations in perceptions at sub-city scale.
