Migration dynamics simulation of migratory fish in rivers

open access: yesEcological Indicators
The decline of migratory fish stocks is a major problem facing the global aquatic ecosystem. Understanding the dynamics of fish migration and their entire life history is crucial for quantitatively assessing the impact of natural and anthropogenic barriers on migratory fish and to understand the mechanisms of their decline.

Fishing out collective memory of migratory schools [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of The Royal Society Interface, 2014
Animals form groups for many reasons, but there are costs and benefits associated with group formation. One of the benefits is collective memory. In groups on the move, social interactions play a crucial role in the cohesion and the ability to make consensus decisions.

Migratory flexibility in native Hawai'ian amphidromous fishes [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2019
AbstractWe assessed the prevalence of life history variation across four of the five native amphidromous Hawai'ian gobioids to determine whether some or all exhibit evidence of partial migration. Analysis of otolith Sr.: Ca concentrations affirmed that all are amphidromous and revealed evidence of partial migration in three of the four species.

A two‐sex integrated population model reveals intersexual differences in life history strategies in Cooper's hawks

open access: yesEcosphere, 2023
Integrated population models (IPMs) combine population counts with demographic data to improve the precision of estimates of population size and demographic rates.

Automating sandhill crane counts from nocturnal thermal aerial imagery using deep learning

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, 2023
Population monitoring is essential to management and conservation efforts for migratory birds, but traditional low‐altitude aerial surveys with human observers are plagued by individual observer bias and risk to flight crews.

Feeding trial evaluation of supplemental sodium and calcium use by pigeons

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2023
The Pacific Coast band‐tailed pigeon's (Patagioenas fasciata monilis) conspicuous and well documented use of supplemental minerals has allowed wildlife managers to conduct counts of pigeons at sites with minerals to index their abundance; but despite at ...

Factors affecting methylmercury biomagnification by a widespread aquatic invertebrate predator, the phantom midge larvae Chaoborus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
MeHg biomagnification by the phantom midge Chaoborus in relation to MeHg concentrations in their prey and its migratory behavior was investigated in two Canadian Precambrian Shield lakes.

Incorporating human dimensions objectives into waterfowl habitat planning and delivery

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2017
The 2012 revision of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) explicitly recognized the need to increase recruitment and retention of waterfowl hunters, birdwatchers, and other conservationists to maintain support for wetland conservation ...

Postrelease exploration and stress tolerance of landlocked and anadromous Atlantic salmon and their hybrids

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, 2023
Threatened fish populations worldwide are relying on stock supplementation by hatchery‐reared fish. Although stocking with non‐native fish may lead to hybridization, thereby disrupting local adaptations, it could also improve the adaptive potential of ...

Distributing transmitters to maximize population-level representativeness in automated radio telemetry studies of animal movement

open access: yesMovement Ecology, 2023
Telemetry is a powerful and indispensable tool for evaluating wildlife movement and distribution patterns, particularly in systems where opportunities for direct observation are limited. However, the effort and expense required to track individuals often
