The Milky Way Galaxy

Scientific American, 1981
Recent work has shown the previous conceptions of the mass and radius of the Milky Way Galaxy to be significantly in error. The present paper discusses various aspects of the current efforts to understand the Milky Way Galaxy which have resulted in new values for the galactic radius and mass.

The Milky Way Galaxy

2016
This book is intended to be a course about the creation and evolution of the universe at large, including the basic macroscopic building blocks (galaxies) and the overall large-scale structure.

The milky way as a galaxy

Astrophysics, 2000
On the basis of literature data, and assuming that the Milky Way satisfies the Tully-Fisher relationship, the main photometric and kinematic characteristics of the Galaxy are summarized. It is shown that, based on the aggregate of the large-scale properties, the Milky Way is a normal L* galaxy.

The Milky Way as a Galaxy

1987
The physical conditions in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way are briefly reviewed. It is noted that the local interstellar medium shows relatively uniform abundances and dust/gas ratios; in fact recent measurements of the 12C/13C ratio indicate that the gas is homogeneous to better than 15%.

The formation and early evolution of the Milky Way galaxy.

Science, 2000
Recent observations indicate that the Milky Way may have formed by aggregation of gas and stars from a reservoir of preexisting small galaxies in the local universe.

The Milky Way Galaxy

1996
On a clear, moonless night, away from city lights, one can see a broad streak of light spanning the heavens. During the northern winter months, it stretches from south to north, eastwards of the well-known constellation Orion. In the summer months, it stretches from the Southern Cross, through the tail of Scorpius, northwards to Cygnus.

Young globular clusters in the Milky Way Galaxy

, 1992
Ruprecht 106 and Pal 12 are two known globular clusters in the Milky Way that are unequivocally younger than other clusters of similar metallicity. The Galactic coordinates of Ruprecht 106 place it near to the Magellanic Stream in projection, suggesting ...

The Milky Way and the Galaxies

1975
There are fields in observational astronomy that are less suited to scientific work by the amateur observer. The following section describes one of them, for only rarely will the amateur astronomer be able to take an active part in the attack on the unsolved problems of galactic research.

The Milky Way: An active galaxy?

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1992
The behavior and interactions of one or more core black holes is described for the mass density environment of the galaxy core and comparisons made between this environment and that of a large spherical stellar system typical of an active galaxy. Data is presented for a range of galaxy types in local galaxy clusters that indicates jetting with kinetic ...
