To vary or not to vary: A flexible empirical Bayes factor for testing variance components

open access: yesBritish Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Random effects are the gold standard for capturing structural heterogeneity, such as individual differences or temporal dependence. Yet testing their presence is difficult because variance components are constrained to be non‐negative, creating a boundary problem. This paper introduces a flexible empirical Bayes factor (EBF) for testing random

Search for high-mass dilepton resonances using 139 fb−1 of pp collision data collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2019
A search for high-mass dielectron and dimuon resonances in the mass range of 250GeV to 6TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13TeV during Run 2 of the Large Hadron ...

The amino terminal domain of the human α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit leads to the functional expression of human/insect receptors

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Human α7 receptors have been characterised in terms of pharmacological properties. Insertion of the N‐terminal domain of the human α7 subunit leads to honeybee and cockroach chimeric receptors activated by ACh and inhibited by α‐Bgt. Insertion of the human cys‐loop leads to cockroach chimeric receptors modulated by PNU.

Chemically Mediated Arrestment of the Bed Bug, Cimex lectularius, by Volatiles Associated with Exuviae of Conspecifics. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Extracts of the exuviae (cast skins) of nymphal bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) were analyzed for volatile compounds that might contribute to arrestment of adult bed bugs. Four volatile aldehydes, (E)-2-hexenal, 4-oxo-(E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-octenal, and 4-oxo-

Study of the hard double-parton scattering contribution to inclusive four-lepton production in pp collisions at s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2019
The inclusive production of four isolated charged leptons in pp collisions is analysed for the presence of hard double-parton scattering, using 20.2 fb−1 of data recorded in the ATLAS detector at the LHC at centre-of-mass energy s=8 TeV.

Measurement of the jet mass in high transverse momentum Z(→bb‾)γ production at s=13TeV using the ATLAS detector

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2021
The integrated fiducial cross-section and unfolded differential jet mass spectrum of high transverse momentum Z→bb‾ decays are measured in Zγ events in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV.

Fish welfare in a changing world: New developments and current challenges

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The welfare of non‐human animals is central to ethical discussions on animal use, with increasing attention to fish welfare across research, aquaria, aquaculture, and fisheries. This paper reviews current theoretical approaches to animal welfare and recent advances in defining and assessing fish welfare since the seminal paper by Huntingford ...

Search for vector-boson resonances decaying to a top quark and bottom quark in the lepton plus jets final state in pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2019
A search for new charged massive gauge bosons, W′, is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Data were collected in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1.
