The 1.2-Megabase Genome Sequence of Mimivirus
Science, 2004We recently reported the discovery and preliminary characterization of Mimivirus, the largest known virus, with a 400-nanometer particle size comparable to mycoplasma. Mimivirus is a double-stranded DNA virus growing in amoebae. We now present its 1,181,404–base pair genome sequence, consisting of 1262 putative open reading frames, 10% of which exhibit

Cryo-electron Microscopy of the Giant Mimivirus
Journal of Molecular Biology, 2005Mimivirus is the largest known virus. Using cryo-electron microscopy, the virus was shown to be icosahedral, covered by long fibers, and appears to have at least two lipid membranes within its protein capsid. A unique vertex, presumably for attachment and infection of the host, can be seen for particles that have a suitable orientation on the ...

Oysters as hot spots for mimivirus isolation
Archives of Virology, 2014Viruses are ubiquitous organisms, but their role in the ecosystem and their prevalence are still poorly understood. Mimiviruses are extremely complex and large DNA viruses. Although metagenomic studies have suggested that members of the family Mimiviridae are abundant in oceans, there is a lack of information about the association of mimiviruses with ...

Mimivirus: the emerging paradox of quasi-autonomous viruses
Trends in Genetics, 2010What is a virus? Are viruses alive? Should they be classified among microorganisms? One would expect these simple questions to have been settled a century after the discovery of the first viral disease. For years, modern virology successfully unravelled the huge diversity of viruses in terms of genetic material, replication mechanism, pathogenicity ...

Mimivirus-Encoded Nucleotide Translocator VMC1 Targets the Mitochondrial Inner Membrane
Journal of Molecular Biology, 2018Mimivirus (Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus) was the first giant DNA virus identified in an amoeba species. Its genome contains at least 979 genes. One of these, L276, encodes a nucleotide translocator with similarities to mitochondrial metabolite carriers, provisionally named viral mitochondrial carrier 1 (VMC1).

Pneumonia in mice inoculated experimentally with Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus
Microbial Pathogenesis, 2007In an attempt to elucidate whether Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APM) was pathogenic (i.e., induces histological evidence of inflammation or tissue destruction or both) in mammalian host, we inoculated adult BALB/c (n=6) and C57BL/6 (n=6) mice with APM via intracardiac route.
