Según Teófilo Potes, la mina nació a orillas del río Iscuandé, departamento del Cauca; esta teoría se apoya en documentos de Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera, 1828, en los cuales se relata acerca de una cantidad de esclavos que habían conseguido su libertad.
