Na-Bentonite and MgO Mixture as a Thickening Agent for Water-Based Paints

open access: yesKONA Powder and Particle Journal, 2014
Rheology plays a major role both in production and application stages of paints. Na-Bentonite, clay based thickening agent, is generally used to modify the viscosity of paints, since it is more economical and ...

Designing a copper mineral processing plant in virtual reality: A new tool for mining engineering education

open access: yesProceedings of the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA), 2022
In 2021, Queen’s University partnered with BBA Engineering Consultants to build a full-scale, virtual reality copper sulphide mineral processing plant. This project, financially support by e-Campus Ontario, aims to prepare Ontario post-secondary institutions to increase their training capacity in mineral processing to meet projected labour demands. The

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Multivariate image processing in minerals engineering with vision transformers

open access: yesMinerals Engineering
Vision transformers (ViTs) are a new class of deep learning algorithms that have recently emerged as a competitive alternative to convolutional neural networks. In this investigation, their application to two operations previously studied in the mineral processing industry is considered.

Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Window into the Early Stages of Complex Material Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid‐phase transmission electron microscopy enables direct observation of nucleation and growth processes in solution. This review is dedicated to the remembrance of Helmut Cölfen and highlights recent studies on complex materials—oxides, biominerals, organic–inorganic crystals—which were central to his research activity. It summarizes key milestones,

Nano-microbubble flotation of fine and ultrafine chalcopyrite particles

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology, 2014
As is well known to mineral processing scientists and engineers, fine and ultrafine particles are difficult to float mainly due to the low bubble-particle collision efficiencies. Though many efforts have been made to improve flotation performance of fine

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.
