Circulation of hydraulically ponded turbidity currents and the filling of continental slope minibasins [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
Natural depressions on continental margins termed minibasins trap turbidity currents, a class of sediment-laden seafloor density driven flow. These currents are the primary downslope vectors for clastic sediment, particulate organic carbon, and ...

How Fast Can Minibasins Translate Down a Slope? Observations from 2D Numerical Models

open access: yesTektonika, 2023
Minibasins are important features in salt-bearing basins and are abundant in salt-detached continental slopes where the salt and the overlying sedimentary cover (including minibasins) undergo seaward translation due to gravity.

Principles of shortening in salt basins containing isolated minibasins

open access: yesBasin Research, 2021
Shortening styles in salt-influenced basins can vary markedly, with the volume and distribution of salt prior to shortening being a key control. Here we use a suite of physical models to examine styles of thin-skinned regional shortening in settings where the pre-shortening structure comprised minibasins surrounded by salt (‘isolated-minibasin ...

Inversion of accommodation zones in salt-bearing extensional systems: insights from analog modeling [PDF]

open access: yesSolid Earth, 2023
This work uses sandbox analog models to analyze the formation and subsequent inversion of a decoupled extensional system comprised of two segmented half-grabens separated by a diffuse accommodation zone with thick early syn-rift salt.

Mass transport deposits in deep-water minibasins: Outcropping examples from the minibasins adjacent to the Bakio salt wall (Basque Country, Northern Spain)

open access: yesMarine and Petroleum Geology, 2021
Abstract Recent subsurface studies show that mass-transport deposits (MTDs) in salt-controlled basins may correspond to local or regional bodies induced by either regional tectonics, or diapir growth. These MTDs are commonly considered as muddy bodies but they may alternatively incorporate a high amount of clasts and reworked beds with good reservoir

Overprinting translational domains in passive margin salt basins: insights from analogue modelling [PDF]

open access: yesSolid Earth, 2019
Current models of gravitational tectonics on the structural styles of salt-influenced passive margins typically depict domains of upslope extension and corresponding downslope contraction separated by a mid-slope domain of translation that is rather ...

‘Halo-kinematic’ sequence-stratigraphic analysis of minibasins in the deepwater contractional province of the Liguro-Provençal basin, Western Mediterranean [PDF]

open access: yesMarine and Petroleum Geology, 2020
This study investigates the co-evolution of gravity-driven thin-skinned salt tectonic processes and minibasin-scale halokinetic-depositional processes for the kinematic analysis of salt diapirs in the diapiric province of the contractional domain of the ...

Unpredictable geometry and depositional stacking patterns of mass-transport complexes in salt minibasins [PDF]

open access: yesMarine and Petroleum Geology, 2020
Mass-transport complexes in a salt minibasin of the Espírito Santo Basin (SE Brazil) are investigated using a high-quality 3D seismic volume and borehole data. A series of six (6), stacked MTCs were identified from the sea floor down to an approximate depth of 1.5 km. These MTCs exhibit a high variability in size and internal structures.

Salt tectonics in the Sivas basin (Turkey): crossing salt walls and minibasins

open access: yesBulletin - Societie Geologique De France, 2014
AbstractThe Sivas basin (Turkey) shows pronounced salt tectonics activity involving the Oligocene evaporites. Despite the complete exposure of the structures, the tectonic evolution of the basin has been so far misunderstood because it has only been envisioned in a context of thrust tectonics.

From salt carapace to secondary minibasin encasement—The Bolon Secondary Minibasin, Eastern External Betics, SE Iberia

open access: yesMarine and Petroleum Geology
The Bolon Secondary Minibasin (BSM) evolved on the now eroded Elda Salt Sheet, which contains fragments of the diapiric roof and syn-contractional sediments.
