Definition and determination of the minimum uncut chip thickness of microcutting
International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2013Uncut chip thickness is comparable to cutting edge radius in micromachining. If the uncut chip thickness is less than a critical value, there will be no chip formation. This critical value is termed as minimum uncut chip thickness (MUCT). Although minimum uncut chip thickness has been well defined in orthogonal cutting, it is often poorly understood in

Estimation of minimum chip thickness in micro-milling using acoustic emission
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2011In micro-machining, determination of the minimum chip thickness is of paramount importance, as features having dimensions below this threshold cannot be produced by the process. This study proposes a methodology to determine the value of minimum chip thickness by analysing acoustic emission (AE) signals generated in orthogonal ...

Modeling of minimum uncut chip thickness in micro machining of aluminum
Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2012Abstract Micro mechanical machining operations can fabricate miniaturized components from a wide range of engineering materials; however, there are several challenges during the operations that can cause dimensional inaccuracies and low productivity. In order to select optimal machining parameters, the material removal behavior during micro machining

Determination of Minimum Uncut Chip Thickness in Micromachining
Advanced Materials Research, 2009In micromachining, the uncut chip thickness is comparable to the tool edge radius, and chip won’t be generated if the uncut chip thickness is less than a critical value, besides that, the minimum uncut chip thickness affect many factors such as the cutting force, the chip’s modality, the cutting surface quality, etc. In this paper, a geometric model is

Minimum chip thickness determination by means of cutting force signal in micro endmilling
Precision Engineering, 2018Abstract Issues related to ploughing affecting the performance of the micromilling process have recently been reported in literature. It is well known that there is a minimum chip thickness (hmin) below which ploughing is the main material removal mechanism and no shear occurs.

Abstract One of the important phenomena of orthogonal cutting process is the occurrence of the minimum uncut chip thickness, as its highly affects the process of cutting initiation and surface roughness. But nowadays non orthogonal i.e., oblique cutting process using special tools with continued cutting edge and high value of cutting angle λs make ...

Abstract Micro-milling is a promising approach to repair the micro-defects on the surface of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal. However, KDP crystal is difficult to machine due to its properties of soft-brittle and easy deliquescence. This study investigates the minimum undeformed chip thickness hm and the size effect in micro end-milling ...

An Analytical Model for the Prediction of Minimum Chip Thickness in Micromachining
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2005In micromachining, the uncut chip thickness is comparable or even less than the tool edge radius and as a result a chip will not be generated if the uncut chip thickness is less than a critical value, viz., the minimum chip thickness. The minimum chip thickness effect significantly affects machining process performance in terms of cutting forces, tool ...

A Micro Milling Model Considering Metal Phases and Minimum Chip Thickness
Key Engineering Materials, 2008In this paper, a micro milling model is brought forward. The influences of different metal phases and the minimum chip thickness are considered in the model. The cutting forces and the surface generation in the micro milling process are predicted. Through the experiment validation, the results correlate to the model very well.
