Exploring Electronic States and Ultrafast Electron Dynamics in AlInP Window Layers: The Role of Surface Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the surface characteristics of AlInP (001), crucial for advanced solar cells and photoelectrochemical devices. Using theoretical modeling and experiments, it identifies how phosphorus‐rich and indium‐rich surfaces create mid‐gap states that pin the Fermi level and influence ultrafast electron dynamics.

Technology Capacity-Building Strategies for Increasing Participation & Persistence in the STEM Workforce [PDF]

open access: yesK. M. Moorning, "Technology Capacity Building Strategies for Increasing Participation & Persistence in the Stem Workforce," International Journal on Integrating Technology in Education, vol 2, no 1, 2018, 2018
This research model uses an emancipatory approach to address challenges of equity in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce. Serious concerns about low minority participation call for a rigorous evaluation of new pedagogical methods that effectively prepares underrepresented groups for the increasingly digital world.

Gd‐Induced Oxygen Vacancy Creation Activates Lattice Oxygen Oxidation for Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DFT calculations shows that Gd incorporation into Fe‐doped NiO raises the O 2p band center, lowers oxygen vacancy formation energy, and thus promotes the LOM mechanism for OER. Gd and Fe co‐doped NiO nanosheets synthesized via spray combustion exhibits a low overpotential of 227 mV and maintains stable AEMWE performance for over 120 h, demonstrating ...

Intraoral Drug Delivery: Bridging the Gap Between Academic Research and Industrial Innovations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Intraoral drug delivery offers a promising route for systemic and localized therapies, yet challenges such as enzymatic degradation, limited permeability, and microbial interactions hinder efficacy. This figure highlights innovative strategies—mucoadhesive materials, enzyme inhibitors, and permeation enhancers—to overcome these barriers.

Optical Control of Ferroelectric Imprint in BiFeO3

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Above‐bandgap irradiation at room temperature enables on‐demand optical control of defect‐driven built‐in electric fields in BiFeO₃ thin films, fabricated via scalable, chemical spray pyrolysis. These fields, otherwise “frozen‐in,” can cause severe device degradation, including non‐switchable polarization, dead layers near interfaces, and polarization ...
