The cranial, mandibular, and hyoid anatomy of softshell turtles (Trionychidae): A revised character list for phylogenetic analysis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Softshell turtles (Pan‐Trionychidae) are an early branching clade of hidden‐necked turtles (Cryptodira) with a rich fossil record extending back to the Early Cretaceous. The evolutionary history of softshell turtles is still unresolved because of their conservative morphology combined with high levels of polymorphism related to morphological ...

Patterns of spinal motion, kinematic spaces and the land‐to‐sea transition in carnivorans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Using 3D reconstructions, we quantify intervertebral joint mobility to investigate how cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral regions evolved distinct kinematic roles in pinnipeds. The findings reveal lineage‐specific adaptations for swimming and highlight the functional significance of vertebral joint flexibility in ecological transitions.

Sedimentary responses of tectonic events in Miocene, western margin of South China Sea: a case study of Wan'an Basin

open access: yesShiyou shiyan dizhi, 2021
The Wan'an Basin is located on the southwestern margin of the South China Sea, and its unique tectonic position has made its filling evolution an important window to study the expansion of the southwest submarine basin and the strike-slip faults on the ...

MicroCT reinvestigation of the only articulated fossil anostomid fish reveals synonymy of Arhinolemur Ameghino, 1898 and Megaleporinus Ramirez et al., 2017

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Arhinolemur scalabrinii† Ameghino, 1898 was originally described as a strepsirrhine primate (Mammalia) but has been recognized as an anostomid fish since 2012. It remains the only extinct anostomid species known from complete cranial material.

Oldest well‐preserved euprimate petrosal, from the early Eocene of India (Vastan Lignite Mine, Gujarat)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract An exquisitely preserved, isolated partial petrosal with associated fragmentary stapes is described from the Vastan Lignite Mine (Gujarat, India), dated to the early Eocene (~54.5 Ma). Several anatomical traits (e.g., large petrosal plate; posterolateral entry of the internal carotid artery to the tympanic cavity; bony tubes surrounding the ...

Remote Roca: Integrating Data From Archaeological Survey, Remote Sensing and Geophysics in the Hinterland at the Long‐Lasting Mediterranean Site of Rocavecchia (Apulia, Italy)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study presents a multi‐method non‐invasive investigation of an approximately 4‐ha area associated with the long‐occupied coastal settlement of Rocavecchia (Apulia, southern Italy), situated between the prehistoric fortified peninsula and the Hellenistic‐Messapian walls.
