Relating the “mirrorness” of mirror neurons to their origins
Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2014AbstractEver since their discovery, mirror neurons have generated much interest and debate. A commonly held view of mirror neuron function is that they transform “visual information into knowledge,” thus enabling action understanding and non-verbal social communication between con-specifics (Rizzolatti & Craighero 2004).

Mirroring mirror neurons in an interdisciplinary debate
Consciousness and Cognition, 2013The current renewal of interest in empathy is closely connected to the recent neurobiological discovery of mirror neurons. We shall focus on one main psychological function it serves: enabling us to understand others' intentions.

Mirror Neurons and Mirror-Touch Synesthesia
The Neuroscientist, 2016Since mirror neurons were introduced to the neuroscientific community more than 20 years ago, they have become an elegant and intuitive account for different cognitive mechanisms (e.g., empathy, goal understanding) and conditions (e.g., autism spectrum disorders).

What is mirrored by mirror neurons?
Poiesis & Praxis, 2008Mirror neurons are a particular class of visumotorical neurons, originally discovered in area F5 of the monkey premotorical cortex. They discharge both (1) when the animal performs a specific action and (2) when it observes a similar action. Actually, it is often assumed that this unique functioning could explain different abilities ranging from ...

Mirror Neurons and Mirror Systems in Monkeys and Humans
Physiology, 2008Mirror neurons are a distinct class of neurons that transform specific sensory information into a motor format. Mirror neurons have been originally discovered in the premotor and parietal cortex of the monkey. Subsequent neurophysiological (TMS, EEG, MEG) and brain imaging studies have shown that a mirror mechanism is also present in humans.

AbstractBesides linguistic communication, which is at the core of human communication, humans communicate using arm gestures, body postures, facial expressions, eye contact, and head and body movements. Communication may be intentional or non-intentional.

Mirror neurons discharge both when a macaque monkey performs an object-directed action, such as grasping a peanut, and when the monkey observes another individual performing the same action, such as when the monkey sees the experimenter grasp a peanut.

From Mirror Writing to Mirror Neurons
2010The article offers a personal perspective on Simulation of Animal Behavior, starting with the inspiration of Norbert Wiener's 1948 Cybernetics for the publication of Brains, Machines, and Mathematics in 1964. This led to a range of simulations of the brains and behaviors of frogs (Rana computatrix), rats, monkeys and humans.

The mirror neuron system: New frontiers
Social Neuroscience, 2008Since the discovery of mirror neurons, much effort has been invested into studying their location and properties in the human brain. Here we review these original findings and introduce the main topics of this special issue of Social Neuroscience. What does the mirror system code?
