Mirror, mirror?

open access: yesGragoatá, 2016
Although several authors have already written about Machado de Assis’s short story “The Mirror: a sketch for a new theory of the human soul”, in this paper we propose a rereading of this tale from some notions of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, especially in respect to the “mirror stage” and its implications in the world we live in.

Large volume multiple-path nuclear pumped laser [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
Large volumes of gas are excited by using internal high reflectance mirrors that are arranged so that the optical path crosses back and forth through the excited gaseous medium.

Overview of molecular signatures of senescence and associated resources: pros and cons

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells can enter a stress response state termed cellular senescence that is involved in various diseases and aging. Detecting these cells is challenging due to the lack of universal biomarkers. This review presents the current state of senescence identification, from biomarkers to molecular signatures, compares tools and approaches, and highlights ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Generation of stable entanglement between two cavity mirrors by squeezed-reservoir engineering

open access: yes, 2015
The generation of quantum entanglement of macroscopic or mesoscopic bodies in mechanical motion is generally bounded by the thermal fluctuation exerted by their environments.

Enhancing Oncological Care for India's Aging Population: Addressing the Complex Needs of Older Adults With Cancer

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Aging‐associated physiological and molecular alterations pose significant challenges in cancer management among India's elderly. Limited geriatric oncology expertise, financial constraints, and inadequate specialized care exacerbate disparities. Strategic expansion of insurance coverage, integration of palliative care, and infrastructural advancements ...

Investigation and review of mirrors reflectance in parabolic trough solar collectors (PTSCs)

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2019
As mirrors used in concentrating solar systems influence the thermal efficiency of the systems collectors to a large extent, the reflectance of mirrors plays a critical role in the thermal efficiency of parabolic trough solar collectors.

Axisymmetric Grazing-Incidence Focusing Optics for Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

open access: yes, 2012
We propose and design novel axisymmetric focusing mirrors, known as Wolter optics, for small-angle neutron scattering instruments. Ray-tracing simulations show that using the mirrors can result in more than an order-of-magnitude increase in the neutron ...

The Aging Blood: Cellular Origins, Circulating Drivers, and Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
As a conduit linking all organs, the blood system both reflects and actively drives systemic aging. This review highlights how circulating pro‐aging and antiaging factors and age‐associated hematopoietic stem cell dysfunction contribute to immunosenescence and multi‐organ decline, positioning the hematopoietic system as a target for aging intervention.
