Prediction of internal stress in alumina laminates induced by shrinkage mismatch based on elastic model modification

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society
Abstract Cracks induced by internal stresses compromise the structural integrity of ceramic laminates. Such stresses can be classified into thermal stress derived from thermal expansion mismatch and shrinkage stress derived from shrinkage mismatch. Analytical models have been proposed for the former, whereas only numerical predictions

Triple Junctions as Dislocation‐Like Defects: The Role of Grain Boundary Crystallography Revealed by Experiment and Atomistic Simulation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Grain boundary triple junctions are an essential ingredient of the microstructure of polycrystalline materials. In this study, a triple junction is observed using atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and characterized. Computer simulations reveal that the junction has a dislocation character that is determined by the joining ...

Effect of Color Output Modification Approach (COMA) on the gray balance: A mismatch of device calibration, destination and source profiles, and halftone screening

open access: yesJournal of Graphic Engineering and Design, 2020
The purpose of this applied research in the digital print production was to determine the influence of applied Color Output Modification Approaches (COMA) or Color Output Sequences (COS) to determine the colorimetric variations (COLVA) on the gray balance (GB) hue in a Color Managed Digital Printing Workflow (CMDPW).

Exploiting the similarity of non-matching terms at retrieval time

open access: yes, 1999
In classic information retrieval systems a relevant document will not be retrieved in response to a query if the document and query representations do not share at least one term.

Microstructure, Thermal Transport, and Dry‐Sliding Tribology of Powder‐Metallurgy Al7075 Composites Reinforced With Sol–Gel‐Derived ZnO–rGO Hybrid Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Sol–gel‐derived ZnO–rGO hybrid nanoparticles enable Al7075 powder‐metallurgy composites to achieve concurrent gains in hardness and thermal conductivity while markedly lowering friction and wear. The hybrid architecture couples ZnO‐based load support with rGO‐assisted lamellar sliding and heat spreading, revealing a promising route toward lightweight ...

Dependence of nucleosome mechanical stability on DNA mismatches

open access: yeseLife
The organization of nucleosomes into chromatin and their accessibility are shaped by local DNA mechanics. Conversely, nucleosome positions shape genetic variations, which may originate from mismatches during replication and chemical modification of DNA ...

Utilising Uracil DNA Glycosylase to detect the presence of 5-Methylcytosine

open access: yes, 2014
DNA is regularly subjected to endogenous and exogenous reagents that cause mutations that can be detrimental to a cell if they are not repaired. One class of enzymes responsible for DNA repair is the family of DNA glycosylases and their role is to remove

Continuous Stiffness Graded Metal–Ceramic Femoral Stems: UMAT‐Based Design and Finite Element Assessment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Functionally graded metal–ceramic femoral stems are engineered through continuous UMAT‐based stiffness tailoring, eliminating discrete material interfaces while enhancing biomechanical compatibility. Low‐index power‐law gradation optimizes load transfer, reduces stress shielding, and controls implant–bone micromotion, highlighting a materials‐design ...

Stretching the Printability Metric in Direct‐Ink Writing with Highly Extensible Yield‐Stress Fluids

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces “drawability” as a new metric for assessing printability in direct‐ink writing, focusing on gap‐spanning performance and speed robustness. By designing yield‐stress fluids with high extensibility, we demonstrate that extensional strain‐to‐break significantly enhances printability.
