Humanism and Medicine: a forced misunderstanding?

open access: yesIatreia
We frequently see the terms medicine and humanism mixed up in different versions and meanings: "humanizing medicine", "humanities in medicine", "more human medicine" or "humanized medicine", among many others.

Farmers’ Protests in Germany: Media Coverage and Types of Bias

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The German farmers’ protests of 2024 sparked widespread media coverage and public debate. Yet, media coverage was not always positive, reflecting the media's attention‐seeking and selective focus. Occurrences of farmers blocking media outlets reflected distrust in how their concerns were portrayed.

Swedish Consumers' Willingness‐to‐Pay for Plant‐Based Proteins in Pasta Sauce: Preferences and Policy Scenarios

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper explores Swedish consumers' protein preferences by estimating the willingness‐to‐pay (WTP) for minced meat and plant‐based proteins in pasta sauce from an in‐store experiment (n = 206) and an online discrete choice experiment (n = 517). On average, the WTP was highest for minced meat.

Which Method Best Predicts Postoperative Complications: Deep Learning, Machine Learning, or Conventional Logistic Regression?

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Deep learning has shown promise in predicting postoperative complications, particularly when using image or time‐series data. However, on tabular clinical data such as the NCD, it often underperforms compared to conventional machine learning. Integrating multimodal data may enhance predictive accuracy and interpretability in surgical care.

Explaining the Origin of Negative Poisson's Ratio in Amorphous Networks With Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This review summarizes how machine learning (ML) breaks the “vicious cycle” in designing auxetic amorphous networks. By transitioning from traditional “black‐box” optimization to an interpretable “AI‐Physics” closed‐loop paradigm, ML is shown to not only discover highly optimized structures—such as all‐convex polygon networks—but also unveil hidden ...

Automated Bacterial Identification and Morphological Feature Analysis in Low‐Dose Cryo‐EM Using YOLOv11

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
AI‐based tools enable rapid characterization of bacterial ultrastructure in low‐dose cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The envelope thickness tool quantifies membrane thickness and anisotropy. The flagella module analyzes filament morphology and detects cell‐flagella contacts.

Misunderstandings

open access: yes, 2013
This project can be seen as a collection of architectural explorations that originate from the concept of misunderstanding. The misunderstanding involves an unconscious transformation that can create something new and unexpected and is therefore an important element both in history and in an individual design process.
