E3 Ubiquitin Ligase TRIM Proteins, Cell Cycle and Mitosis

open access: yesCells, 2019
The cell cycle is a series of events by which cellular components are accurately segregated into daughter cells, principally controlled by the oscillating activities of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and their co-activators.

Cellular aspect ratio and cell division mechanics underlie the patterning of cell progeny in diverse mammalian epithelia. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Cell division is essential to expand, shape, and replenish epithelia. In the adult small intestine, cells from a common progenitor intermix with other lineages, whereas cell progeny in many other epithelia form contiguous patches.

Polo‐Like Kinase 1 Phosphorylation Tunes the Functional Viscoelastic Properties of the Centrosome Scaffold

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To enable mitotic spindle assembly during cell division, centrosomes must bear tensile stresses generated by microtubule‐mediated pulling forces. Micro‐rheology reveals that PLK‐1 phosphorylation of the scaffold protein SPD‐5 tunes the viscoelasticity, size, and morphology of the centrosome scaffold in C. elegans.

Deficiency of mastl, a mitotic regulator, results in cell detachment from developing tissues of zebrafish embryos

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
To form tissues with unique functions and structures, it is important that the cells that comprise them maintain physical contact. On the other hand, with each mitosis, drastic changes in cell shapes, cell adhesion, and cytoskeletal architecture may ...

Mitotic antipairing of homologous and sex chromosomes via spatial restriction of two haploid sets. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Pairing homologous chromosomes is required for recombination. However, in nonmeiotic stages it can lead to detrimental consequences, such as allelic misregulation and genome instability, and is rare in human somatic cells.

Cellpose+, a Morphological Analysis Tool for Feature Extraction of Stained Cell Images

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
We introduce Cellpose plus, a morphological and geometrical analysis tool for feature extraction of stained cell images built over Cellpose, a state‐of‐the‐art cell segmentation framework. We also introduce a dataset of DAPI and FITC stained cells to which our new method is applied.

Unveiling an Arpp-19 phosphorylation switch that grants chromosome stability

open access: yesCommunications Biology
During cell division, the onset of mitosis is granted by activation of cyclin B-dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1), master mitotic kinase, coordinated with inactivation of Cdk1-counteracting phosphatases.

Ki-67 and CDK1 control the dynamic association of nuclear lipids with mitotic chromosomes

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research
Nuclear lipids play roles in regulatory processes, such as signaling, transcriptional regulation, and DNA repair. In this report, we demonstrate that nuclear lipids may contribute to Ki-67-regulated chromosome integrity during mitosis.

A simple biophysical model emulates budding yeast chromosome condensation

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Mitotic chromosomes were one of the first cell biological structures to be described, yet their molecular architecture remains poorly understood. We have devised a simple biophysical model of a 300 kb-long nucleosome chain, the size of a budding yeast ...

Resonant microchannel volume and mass measurements show that suspended cells swell during mitosis

open access: yesJournal of Cell Biology, 2015
Suspended cells transiently increase their volume during mitosis because of ion exchange through the plasma membrane.
