Evaluation of Mitral Regurgitation

Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 2006
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) provides high-resolution images of the mitral valve apparatus, permitting detailed evaluation of its structure and function. Mitral valve evaluation is invaluable during mitral valve repair surgery, providing insight into the mechanism of valve dysfunction and formulation of a plan for repair.

Silent Mitral Regurgitation

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1975
Summary: The occurrence of significant mitral regurgitation without the characteristic auscultatory signs, particularly the holosystolic murmur and the third heart sound, is unusual. It becomes of considerable importance when it occurs in combined lesions of the mitral valve, and more so in those areas where the treatment of mitral stenosis is by ...

Mitral Valve Repair for Mitral Regurgitation

Revista Española de Cardiología (English Edition), 2006
We analyzed the results of mitral valve repair in 81 consecutive patients with severe mitral regurgitation. Of these patients, 66.6% had myxomatous degeneration, 11% ischemic disease, 8% chordal rupture, 5% congenital disease, and 3.7% endocarditis. Repair could not be achieved in five patients, and valve replacement was necessary.

The pathophysiology of mitral regurgitation

2012
The results of treatment of heart valve disease have improved steadily during the past 20 years. In aortic stenosis, although postoperative survival rates approximated those of age-matched controls, the outcome of surgery to treat ischemic and non-ischemic mitral regurgitation was grave. The reasons for this were two-fold: first, patients were referred

Prophylactic mitral reconstruction for mitral regurgitation

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2001
Mitral regurgitation (MR) will produce myocardial dysfunction. The goal of this study was to review outcomes of mitral valve reconstruction in asymptomatic patients with severe MR.From 1992 to 2000, 93 asymptomatic patients with degenerative disease and severe MR underwent mitral valve reconstruction.

Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation

2010
Ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) is a functional problem, which results from ischemia of the ventricle. Except in the case of ischemic papillary muscle rupture, the mitral apparatus is anatomically normal and the regurgitation is solely caused by abnormal systolic motion of the ventricle, interfering with the normal closure physiology of the valve ...

Surgery for Mitral Regurgitation

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1988
Mitral regurgitation is a valvular heart lesion that is difficult to diagnose accurately; thus, it is difficult to determine the appropriate timing for surgical correction. With increasing use of reparative techniques, including local resection of valve pathology and placement of an annuloplasty ring, and the realization that chronic atrial ...
