Mitral stenosis is a progressive lesion carrying a relatively high risk of sudden incapacitation from systemic embolus or the onset of atrial fibrillation. Since the condition is likely to be significant when diagnosed, it is not compatible with single-crew professional operations and requires careful supervision.

Cardiac myxomas arising from the mitral valve are extremely rare. We describe the case of an asymptomatic 49-year-old woman who was found to have a 3.6 x 4.0-cm myxoma originating from the atrial side of the anterior mitral leaflet. The lesion was successfully treated by surgical excision and mitral valve replacement.

A 57-yr-old woman presented to the hospital for further evaluation of recently diagnosed severe primary pulmonary hypertension. Her medical and surgical histories were significant for aortic valvuloplasty in 1961, a St. Jude aortic valve replacement in July 1998, and a subsequent reoperation for the placement of a bioprosthetic aortic valve in ...

Mitral valve prolapse is defined as abnormal bulging of the mitral valve leaflets into the left atrium during ventricular systole. Mitral valve prolapse is a common condition that is a risk factor for mitral regurgitation, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and endocarditis. Myxomatous degeneration is the most common cause of mitral prolapse in the

Mitral valve prosthetic ring annuloplasty represents a key milestone in the history of mitral valve repair, delivering restoration of annular shape and size. Increased leaflet coaptation, together with significant reduction in stress on sutures, has ensured predictability and immediate stability for valve repair, both of which were lacking with ...

Mitral valve prolapse is a condition that is being recognized with increased frequency. It is not known whether its incidence is increasing, or whether we are better able to diagnose it today. In the idiopathic or familial variety, the mitral valve pathology is almost always that of myxomatous degeneration. Some authors have suggested the presence of a

A double mitral valve is one of the rarest of congenital anomalies of the heart. Only 17 instances have been reported. Herein we report the 18th case and the only one in which cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography were performed. Report of Case A 55-year-old bartender who drank whiskey freely was first admitted into the Episcopal Hospital on ...
