Mitral-Valve Repair for Mitral-Valve Prolapse

New England Journal of Medicine, 2009
A 55-year-old man presents with a holosystolic murmur of increasing intensity and is given a diagnosis of mitral-valve prolapse with severe mitral regurgitation. He is asymptomatic but has mildly depressed left ventricular function and mild left ventricular enlargement. Mitral-valve repair is recommended.

Mitral valve prolapse and sudden cardiac death: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Heart, 2018
Objectives Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is commonly observed as a benign finding. However, the literature suggests that it may be associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD).

The genetics of mitral valve prolapse

Clinical Genetics, 2007
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a very common clinical condition that refers to a systolic billowing of one or both mitral valve leaflets into the left atrium. Improvements of echocardiographic techniques and new insights in mitral valve anatomy and physiology have rendered the diagnosis of this condition more accurate and reliable.

Mitral valve prolapse and agoraphobia

American Journal of Psychiatry, 1983
Of 46 female agoraphobic patients, three had definite and four had probable mitral valve prolapse--a total prevalence of only 15%. There were no significant differences between patients with mitral valve prolapse and the rest of the sample on demographic and clinical variables, nor did the groups differ significantly on measures of psychological ...

Papillary muscle ventricular arrhythmias in patients with arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse: Electrophysiologic substrate and catheter ablation outcomes

Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, 2019
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common valve condition and has been associated with sudden cardiac death. Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) from the papillary muscles (PMs) may play a role as triggers for ventricular fibrillation (VF) in these ...

Repair of Mitral-Valve Prolapse

New England Journal of Medicine, 2010
To the Editor: In the review article by Verma and Mesana (Dec. 3 issue),1 mitral-valve prolapse is defined as the displacement of some portion of one or both mitral-valve leaflets into the left atrium during systole. This term was introduced in 1966 by Criley et al.2 and has been frequently used as a synonym for “billowing mitral leaflet,” which was ...

Perspectives on Mitral-Valve Prolapse

New England Journal of Medicine, 1999
More than three decades ago, Barlow and Bosman described a constellation of clinical findings consisting of non-ejection systolic clicks and a late systolic murmur, T-wave abnormalities, and systol...

Pain in mitral valve prolapse

Pain, 1989
Thirty subjects with mitral valve prolapse were carefully observed, in order to investigate whether chest pain, characteristic of angina pectoris, was present. No cases of angina pectoris or of heart pain were observed. A characteristic which did emerge was that 86% of the subjects suffered a typical myofascial pain of the muscles of the chest.

Mitral Valve Prolapse in the Elderly

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 1979
ABSTRACTThis study included 40 patients over 60 years of age with echocardiographic findings of mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Most of these patients were unaware of any cardiac disorder until the time of echocardiography. In the majority, the clinical manifestations were benign, and the duration of symptoms variable.
