Recurrence of valvular involvement in Libman–Sacks endocarditis associated with antiphospholipid syndrome: A case report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports
Key Clinical Message Recurrence of valvular involvement may occur after Libman–Sacks endocarditis surgery, emphasizing the need for frequent multivalvular evaluations with echocardiography or more sensitive methods to optimize surgical outcomes. Abstract

Exploratory Laparotomy After Routine Cardiac Surgery: Results From 17,000 Patients

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Exploratory laparotomy is rare after open‐heart surgery, and it was performed for gastrointestinal complications that occurred in the context of other severe postoperative complications. Several factors were associated with the need for exlap, including increasing age, pre‐existing renal and vascular disease, and pre‐ and post‐operative shock. ABSTRACT

Time of day of cardiac surgery and postoperative outcomes in the UK: a secondary analysis of linked national datasets

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 81, Issue 6, Page 775-782, June 2026.
Summary Introduction Uncertainty remains regarding whether the time of day that cardiac surgery is performed affects postoperative outcomes or if the observed variation can be explained by patient or surgical factors. Methods A secondary analysis of prospectively collected data was conducted to examine the association between time of cardiac surgery ...

Hemocompatibility Outcomes After Aspirin Withdrawal in Long‐Term HeartMate 3 Left Ventricular Assist Device Patients on Vitamin K Antagonists

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Aspirin discontinuation in long‐term, stable Heart Mate 3 LVAD patients maintained on Vitamin K antagonists did not increase hemocompatibility‐related adverse events. These findings support the safety of simplified antithrombotic therapy and extend randomized evidence for aspirin avoidance to the long‐term management of Heart Mate 3 recipients ...

Outcomes in Patients Requiring VENO‐Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation After Cardiac Surgery: An Analysis From the PELS‐1 Study

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
We report an insight from the PELS‐1– a multicentre, international registry focusing on postocardiotomy extracorporeal support use between 2000 and 2020. We focused on 24/2163 (1.1%) patients requiring V‐V ECMO after cardiac surgery. Mortality was high, with 21.7% of patients discharged alive and an overall 1‐year survival probability of 12.5 ...

Comparison of Intraoperative Doppler Flow Measurements and Algorithmic Flow Estimations in Patients Undergoing Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Direct intraoperative HeartMate 3 LVAD flow measurements using an ultrasonic probe revealed consistently higher values by approximately 0.5 L/min compared to device‐estimated flows. This discrepancy remained stable across pump speed settings, highlighting the importance of distinguishing measured from estimated flow in HeartMate 3 patients.

The first case of Reel Syndrome in a dog after pacemaker implantation: A case report

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Reel Syndrome is a rare complication of permanent pacemaker implantation, characterised by the rotation of the device around its transverse axis, which causes the lead to coil around the generator and displacement, leading to pacing dysfunction. This report presents the first documented case of Reel Syndrome in a dog.
