Do black colobus in mixed-species groups benefit from increased foraging efficiency?

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series III - Sciences de la Vie, 1997
Seed-eating in the African colobines varies according to species and site. Because seeds are more palatable than leaves, seed-eating is considered to result from a positive choice by colobines. A year-long study of the diet of Colobus satanas in Central Gabon confirmed that this species eats a significant amount of seeds.

When close neighbours become good friends: plasticity of behavioural traits in sympatric fishes that form mono- and mixed-species groups

Marine and Freshwater Behaviour & Physiology, 2019
Like mono-species fish groups, formation of mixed-species assemblages is likely driven by trophic influences and interspecific behavioural traits. Our aim was to identify how sympatric estuarine species of differing phenotypes form mixed-species group ...

Behavioral Flexibility of Pine Siskins in Mixed Species Foraging Groups

The Condor, 1979
They [the Pine Siskins] were exceedingly fond of sunflower seeds, but their bills were so tender that they were hardly able to crack the hard shells so as to obtain the kernel inside. So they would watch their opportunity, and whenever an Evening Grosbeak came to the feeding-shelf and began cracking the seeds, he would be surrounded by several of the ...

Utilization of mixed species through grouping and standards

Australian Forestry, 1980

Anti-Predation Benefits in a Mixed-Species Group of Amazonian Tamarins

Folia Primatologica, 1993
Because of their small body size, tamarins are potentially vulnerable to a wide range of predator species. This paper examines the general patterns of predator avoidance of the Avila-Pires saddle-back tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis avilapiresi) and the red-cap moustached tamarin (Saguinus mystax pileatus) in the upper Urucu river, Amazonas, Brazil.

Interindividual distances in mixed-species groups of ants: an estimation of cohesion in social groups

Journal of Ethology, 1995
Spatial organization was estimated in mixed-species groups of ants with interindividual distance measures as a function of: (1) the age of the workers when associated; and (2) the presence of the brood. Workers ofManica rubida (Myrmicinae) andFormica selysi (Formicinae) were reared in single-species groups (control) or in artificial, mixed-species ...
