Global Anomalies and Effective Field Theory [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
We show that matching anomalies under large gauge transformations and large diffeomorphisms can explain the appearance and non-renormalization of couplings in effective field theory. We focus on thermal effective field theory where we argue that the appearance of certain unusual Chern-Simons couplings is a consequence of global anomalies. As an example,

Observation of an unusual magnetic anomaly in the superconducting mixed state of heavy-fermion compound UBe13 by precise dc magnetization measurements.

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2012
We have performed precise dc magnetization measurements for a single crystal of UBe(13) down to 0.14 K, up to 80 kOe. We observed a magnetic anomaly in the superconducting (SC) mixed state at a field, named H(Mag)(*) (~ 26 kOe, at 0.14 K), implying that ...

Single‐Layer Spin‐Orbit‐Torque Magnetization Switching Due to Spin Berry Curvature Generated by Minute Spontaneous Atomic Displacement in a Weyl Oxide

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐layer magnetization switching with a small critical current density of ≈106 A cm−2 is demonstrated. The strong intrinsic spin Hall effect, causing the switching, is induced by the synergy of the inherent spin‐orbit coupling and the spontaneous oxygen octahedral rotation in SrRuO3.The findings highlight the immense potential for realizing ...
