Mixed-Effects Contextual Bandits

Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence
We study a novel variant of a contextual bandit problem with multi-dimensional reward feedback formulated as a mixed-effects model, where the correlations between multiple feedback are induced by sharing stochastic coefficients called random effects.

Mixing Systems: and the Effects of Vacuum Mixing on Bone Cement

British Journal of Perioperative Nursing (United Kingdom), 2001
This third article in our series on bone cement mixing covers the effect that modern vacuum mixing techniques and the design of the mixer can have on improving the mechanical properties of the bone cement. This will ultimately lead to a better long-term outcome for the patient.

Modelling of compressibility effects in mixing layers

Journal of Turbulence, 2002
The ability of turbulence models to predict self-similar mixing layers is investigated. The influence of velocity is well captured but no model reproduces the sensitivity of the mixing layer to density differences. A correction proposed for boundary layer flows hardly affects mixing layer predictions.

Mixed-Effects Models

2018
We have covered a variety of statistical models in this book, but all have shared a common feature: The criterion and error term were treated as random variables, but all of the predictors were assumed to be fixed. In this chapter, we will consider models that include a broader mixture of fixed and random variables.

Mixed Effects Models

1989
In most design set-ups such as block designs or row-column designs classification effects such as block effects or row (column) effects are regarded fixed. When these are also considered random variables, we have one or more additional sources of information for estimating treatment effect parameters. Such models are known as mixed effects models.

Is there a school mix effect?

Educational Review, 2006
This paper uses the notion of ‘pathological’ social science, wherein large claims to knowledge are made on the basis of very small differences in the data, to consider the notion of the school mix ...

China’s Mixed Effectiveness

2023
Abstract Despite significant media coverage suggesting Beijing is enjoying great success in its global media and information expansion and its covert influence tactics in other countries, in reality its success has been mixed. This mixed success is important for policymakers in other states to keep in mind.

Mixed-Effects Models

2012
With one exception the models that we have treated before this chapter contain a single source of variability. In the linear models with Gaussian error, the variance of the population was estimated from the residuals. In the GLM models used to describe the judgments of observers, the variability of observer’s choices is given by that of the binomial ...

Mixed-effects models

2019
The use of linear mixed-effect models is becoming increasingly popular in neuroimaging. These models extend the simple linear models by allowing both fixed and random effects, and are particularly useful for clustered and hierarchical data. These are the materials from a session held at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge, UK, where ...

The Mixed Alkali Effect

1985
The term “mixed alkali (MA) effect”, as originally proposed, refers to a large deviation in glass properties as a function of composition as one alkali ion is replaced by another. For example, in XNa20 — (1 — X) K20 — 3 Si02 glasses intermediate composition (X ~ 0.5) exhibit electrical conductivities several orders of magnitude lower than do the end ...
