Critical Stress in Mixed Mode Fracture

2003
(a) For the geometry in Figure. 1, determine the direction of crack propagation according to the maximum tangential stress criterion of Erdogan and Sih [1]. (b) Sketch this direction on a figure. (c) Determine the critical stress at fracture, σcrit.

Mixed Mode Fracture for Notched Structures

2001
This paper deals with the problem of mixed mode fracture. Elastic finite element analyses are described for circular rings containing a V-notch on the internal radius. The circular rings are subjected to a pair of unsymmetrical loads on the outside radius. With elastic analysis, the mixed mode stress field near the notch root is calculated.

Mixed Mode Fracture in Anisotropic Media

1976
Tests were performed on straight-grained timber to give Mode I fractures in three geometries, and satisfactory K1 data were produced. Mode II tests were more difficult to perform, and the data correlated on a constant net section shear stress basis indicated some form of shear yielding failure. The mixed mode tests used tension specimens with the grain

Mixed mode (Mode I-II) fracturing of rocks

2010
A major challenge in rock fracture mechanics research at its current stage of development is the extrapolation of parameter values measured at laboratory-scale on small, intact rock specimens to large-scale jointed rock masses. Understanding crack growth is therefore very important for assessing the stability of rock masses/materials and for the sage ...

Mixed mode interface fracture criteria

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1990
Abstract The shielding of the full effect of mode II and III for interface cracks in brittle materials is demonstrated to be very important such that proper interface fracture criteria need to be modelled. A method for comparison of different phenomenological fracture criteria is discussed and applied to an experiment for a polyimide/glass interface.

Mixed-Mode Interfacial Fracture Mechanics

1991
Major advances have been made in the mechanics of interface fracture. An account of a pragmatic engineering methodology, which allows the fracture resistance of interfaces to be measured and utilized, has appeared in a Proceeding edited by Ruhle, Evans, Ashby and Hirth [1] and in a comprehensive article by Hutchinson and Suo [2]. The plasticity aspects

Mixed mode fracture in concrete beams

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract In this paper we discuss mixed mode experiments over symmetrically notched beams of concrete. In particular, one considered geometrically similar specimens of different size-scale. The beam was loaded to failure using crack-mouth-sliding-displacement control.
