Land use density, land use mix, and walking: insight from a simple theoretical model
2023AbstractBackgroundLand use density and land use mix are the two most studied characteristics of the built environment and generally, it is believed that higher land use density and higher level of land use mix are associated with more walking, especially for utilitarian purposes.

Urban Studies, 2018
This study clarifies the previously unknown limitations of the entropy-based land-use mix index and suggests conditions under which the index is valid. The land-use mix index has an n-shaped relationship to dependent variables, which was evidenced by this study, but previous studies have ignored the problem.

A dynamic human activity‐driven model for mixed land use evaluation using social media data
Trans. GIS, 2018Massive amounts of social media data have enabled the evaluation of mixed land use from the human activities perspective. While most studies have focused on approaches to better measure mixed land use, the dynamic activity patterns used to distinguish ...

Assessing Ecosystem Health in Rural Mixed Land-Use Watersheds
21st Century Watershed Technology: Improving Water Quality and Environment Conference Proceedings, 29 March - 3 April 2008, Concepcion, Chile, 2008A paired stream approach was used to assess ecosystem health in two rural Nova Scotia streams with varying land use practices. The study sought to determine the feasibility of qualifying stream health using a few select parameters over a short sampling season.

Social diversity and modal choice strategies in mixed land-use development in South Africa
The South African Geographical Journal, 2018The consensus of the literature is that mixing land uses enhances social diversity within neighbourhoods and increases the diversity of modal choices. South Africa is burdened by the historic legacies and inherited Euclidean (Single-Use) zoning practises,

Sediment sources in an urbanizing, mixed land-use watershed
Journal of Hydrology, 2002The Issaquah Creek watershed is a rapidly urbanizing watershed of 144 km 2 in western Washington, where sediment aggradation of the main channel and delivery of fine sediment into a large downstream lake have raised increasingly frequent concerns over flooding, loss of fish habitat, and degraded water quality.

Defining mixed-use: which land uses promote walking?
2009A growing body of literature finds that mixed-use development can affect trip frequency, trip length and mode choice. Though researchers have explored the general impacts of this type of development on travel, few have examined which specific land uses should be mixed to achieve transportation-related goals.
