Eddy‐induced mixed layer shallowing and mixed layer/thermocline exchange [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2000
The effects of eddies on the mixed layer and on the transfer of properties between the mixed layer and thermocline are studied in a high‐resolution model of an unstable front. A spring scenario is considered, with a mixed layer maintained against surface warming by wind mixing.

Surface mixed and mixing layer depths

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 1995
Abstract In order to understand the daily cycle of heat storage within the surface mixed layer it is necessary to distinguish between the mixed layer, the zone of relatively homogeneous water formed by the history of mixing, and the mixing layer, the zone in which mixing is currently active.

Mixing and mixed layer depths in the ocean

2021
The ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL) is one of the largest global regulators of climate. There are two definitions associated with its depth: the mixed layer depth (MLD) and the mixing layer depth (XLD). The former is estimated using vertical profiles of temperature and density, and the latter using measurements of the dissipation rate of turbulent ...

A Mixed-Layer Model Of The Well-Mixed Stratocumulus-Topped Boundary Layer

Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 2001
Recently a range of sophisticated large-eddy simulations of thecloud-topped boundary layer have been intercompared and furthercompared with observations and single column models. Here we comparethese results with perhaps the simplest model of the cloud-toppedboundary layer, namely a mixed-layer model.

On Disturbances to a Stratified Mixing Layer

Studies in Applied Mathematics, 2001
Using a nonlinear critical layer analysis, we examine the behavior of disturbances to the Holmboe model of a stratified shear layer for Richardson numbers 0<J≤1/4, regarding J as an ϑ (1) quantity rather than a small quantity. By examining the structure of the solution inside the critical layer, we demonstrate that, for this particular flow ...
