Pivotal Role of Mixed‐Layer Depth in Tropical Atlantic Multidecadal Variability [PDF]
The tropical arm of Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) influences climate worldwide, yet the mechanisms generating it remain unclear. Here, we examine experiments with sea surface temperature (SST)‐restoring in the extratropical North Atlantic in ...

A Framework for Assessing Ocean Mixed Layer Depth Evolution
The ocean surface mixed layer plays a crucial role as an entry or exit point for heat, salt, momentum, and nutrients from the surface to the deep ocean.

Southern Ocean mixed‐layer depth from Argo float profiles [PDF]
Argo float profiles of temperature, salinity, and pressure are used to derive the mixed‐layer depth (MLD) in the Southern Ocean. MLD is determined from individual profiles using both potential density and potential temperature criteria, and a monthly climatology is derived from individual MLDs using an objective mapping method.

Three decades of Mediterranean mixed layer depth change: basin trends and regional contrasts
IntroductionThe mixed layer depth (MLD) regulates air–sea heat fluxes, nutrient entrainment, and ecosystem dynamics in the Mediterranean Sea, making its long-term evolution a sensitive indicator of climate-driven changes in ocean stratification and ...

Origins of mesoscale mixed-layer depth variability in the Southern Ocean [PDF]
Mixed-layer depth (MLD) exhibits significant variability, which is important for atmosphere–ocean exchanges of heat and atmospheric gases. The origins of the mesoscale MLD variability in the Southern Ocean are studied here in an idealised regional ocean ...

Ocean Mixed Layer Depth From Dissipation
AbstractThe mixed layer depth (MLD) is a widely used parameter for physical, chemical, and biological oceanography. The MLD delimits that region of the ocean, which is directly influenced by the atmosphere. There is a similar length scale referred to as the mixing layer depth, which is determined from profiles of dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic ...
