Evaluating the sonic layer depth relative to the mixed layer depth
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2008Using a global set of in situ temperature and salinity profile observations, the sonic layer depth (SLD) and the mixed layer depth (MLD) are analyzed and compared over the annual cycle. The SLD characterizes the potential of the upper ocean to trap acoustic energy in a surface duct while MLD characterizes upper ocean mixing.

A simple approach to evaluate mixed layer depths
Environmental Software, 1991In this paper we present a review of the different existing methods to evaluate the mixed layer depth (zi) by using direct and simple meteorological data over a mast. Wind speed at one height in the atmosphere and temperature at two levels are the necessary values for calculating a value of the mixed layer depth.
