From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.

Breathable Graphene Oxide‐Polymer Composite Membranes With Two‐Step Barrier Mechanism Against Nerve Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Breathable membranes that reject chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are required for next‐generation protective apparel. A dual‐function graphene oxide (GO)‐polyamine architecture is introduced that addresses the long‐standing tradeoff between vapor transmission and CWA selectivity.

Mixed-matrix membranes [PDF]

open access: possible, 2016
Mixed matrix membranes are prepared from zeolites and polymers, such as polyimides, in a void free fashion where either no voids or voids of less than several Angstroms are present at the interface of the polymer and the zeolite by bonding (hydrogen, ionic, or covalent) functional groups on the zeolite with functional groups on the polymer.

Hollow filler based mixed matrix membranes

Chemical Communications, 2010
Micron-sized hollow spheres with zeolitic shell were used as inorganic fillers in PDMS-based mixed matrix membranes, overall enhancing solvent permeabilities as compared to traditional zeolite fillers, while selectivities were maintained.

Mixed matrix membrane development

Membrane Technology, 2002
Abstract: Two types of mixed matrix membranes were developed by UOP in the late 1980s. The first type includes adsorbent polymers, such as silicalite‐cellulose acetate (CA), NaX‐CA, and AgX‐CA mixed matrix membranes. The silicalite‐CA has a CO2/H2 selectivity of 5.15 ± 2.2. In contrast, the CA membrane has a CO2/H2 selectivity of 0.77 ± 0.06.

Mixed-matrix membrane adsorbers for protein separation

Journal of Chromatography A, 2003
The separation of two similarly sized proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (Hb) was carried out using a new type of ion-exchange mixed-matrix adsorber membranes. The adsorber membranes were prepared by incorporation of various types of Lewatit ion-exchange resins into an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer porous structure.

Advanced Porous Materials in Mixed Matrix Membranes

Advanced Materials, 2018
AbstractMembrane technology has gained great interest in industrial separation processing over the past few decades owing to its high energy efficiency, small capital investment, environmentally benign characteristics, and the continuous operation process.

Permeation models for mixed matrix membranes

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2008
Permeation models for mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are discussed. A new model is proposed for the effective permeability of a species in MMMs. The model takes into account the presence of interfacial layer (shell) at the surface of the core filler particles.

Perspectives on mixed matrix membranes

Journal of Membrane Science, 2011
This perspective is meant to provide some background and future directions for mixed matrix membranes. It is not meant to be a complete review but an initial description that allows the reader to find appropriate articles on various aspects of this topic and develop a better understanding so that they can pursue this topic with the information needed ...
