From Intermarriage to Conjugal Mixedness
Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, 2015Studies on intermarriage generally take for granted the better integration of migrants, who married outside their own group when settling into a host society. Intermarriage, however, is a more complicated process than that, however; calling it “conjugal mixedness” stresses its intersectional quality and takes marital norms, inequality between partners,

Chapter 5 explores the transnational dimensions of racial imaginings through the vision of Brazil as a mixed-race tropical paradise in both U.S. and Brazilian productions. U.S. hip-hop music videos such as Snoop Dogg and Pharrell’s “Beautiful” (2003), will.i.am’s “I Got It from My Mama” (2007), and the Hollywood film Fast Five (2011) exploit Brazil’s ...

Framing Blackness and Mixedness:
2020Chapter 2 focuses on mass-market newspaper and magazine depictions of actresses Jennifer Beals and Halle Berry in the United States and Camila Pitanga in Brazil. The chapter begins by laying out the national policy debates such as census racial categories and affirmative action in the 1990s and 2000s in order to relate how the media framing of these ...

Entropy fluctuations to quantify mixedness
International Journal of Quantum Information, 2019We propose a mixedness quantifier based on entropy fluctuations. It provides information about the degree of mixedness either for finite dimensional and infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces (HS). It may be used to determine the reduction of the HS as it becomes maximum when either the state is maximally mixed, or when the HS effectively reduces its ...

Mixedness in the formation of a vortex ring
Physics of Fluids, 1995The mixing process in the formation of an axisymmetric vortex ring is analyzed by direct numerical simulation. After the initial phase, when the impulse is imparted to the fluid, the mixing increases linearly in time with a slope that is directly proportional to the vortex circulation (Γ) and to reactants diffusivity to the power −1/3 (Pe−0.33).

Family, Identity and Mixedness
2021Approaching the question of identity through a lens that combines interactionist and intersectional perspectives, and applies two strands of sociological theories, Mengxi Pang invites readers to unravel the process of identity-making and to delineate the effect of family and wider society on the formation of mixed identities in Scotland.

Mixedness in the well-stirred reactor
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1967Studies by scattered light measurements of the flow configuration and mixing patterns in a multi-jet-stirred spherical reactor are presented. Results indicate the basic requirements for good mixing to be penetration of the feed jets from the central feed surface to the chamber wall with the optimum number of feed jets that required for the jet-spread ...

‘Not Only, But Also’: Mixedness and Media
Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, 2005Multicultural media policies and practices developed to foster excluded voices may actually work to fix monological minority sub-cultures without developing channels and genres that cross over ethnic divisions and foster dialogic understanding. Conceptually, the study of diasporic media runs the danger of assuming a cultural fixity belied by the social
