A data driven equivariant approach to constrained Gaussian mixture modeling

open access: yes, 2016
Maximum likelihood estimation of Gaussian mixture models with different class-specific covariance matrices is known to be problematic. This is due to the unboundedness of the likelihood, together with the presence of spurious maximizers. Existing methods

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The Vuong-Lo-Mendell-Rubin Test for Latent Class and Latent Profile Analysis: A Note on the Different Implementations in Mplus and LatentGOLD

open access: yesMethodology
Mplus and LatentGOLD implement the Vuong-Lo-Mendell-Rubin test (comparing models with K and K + 1 latent classes) in slightly differ manners. While LatentGOLD uses the formulae from Vuong (1989; https://doi.org/10.2307/1912557), Mplus replaces the ...

Jointly Modeling Topics and Intents with Global Order Structure

open access: yes, 2015
Modeling document structure is of great importance for discourse analysis and related applications. The goal of this research is to capture the document intent structure by modeling documents as a mixture of topic words and rhetorical words.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Laplacian Mixture Modeling for Network Analysis and Unsupervised Learning on Graphs

open access: yes, 2018
Laplacian mixture models identify overlapping regions of influence in unlabeled graph and network data in a scalable and computationally efficient way, yielding useful low-dimensional representations.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Mixture Multigroup Bayesian SEM With Approximate Measurement Invariance for Comparing Structural Relations Across Many Groups

open access: yesMethodology
In social sciences, researchers often compare relations between constructs, referred to as “structural relations”, across a large number of groups. This paper proposes Mixture Multigroup Bayesian SEM (MixMG-BSEM), a novel method for comparing structural ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Positive Sequential Data Modeling Using Continuous Hidden Markov Models Based on Inverted Dirichlet Mixtures

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
The hidden Markov model (HMM) has long been one of the most commonly used probability graph models for modeling sequential or time series data. It has been widely used in many fields ranging from speech recognition, face recognition, anomaly detection ...
