Face detection using a mixture of factor analyzers

Proceedings 1999 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. 99CH36348), 2003
We present a probabilistic method to detect human faces using a mixture of factor analyzers. One characteristic of this mixture model is that it concurrently performs clustering and, within each cluster, local dimensionality reduction. A wide range of face images including ones in different poses, with different expressions and under different lighting

Two-layer Mixture of Factor Analyzers with Joint Factor Loading

2015 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN), 2015
Dimensionality Reduction (DR) is a fundamental yet active research topic in pattern recognition and machine learning. When used in classification, previous research usually performs DR separately, and then inputs the reduced features to other available models, e.g., Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM).

Mixture of longitudinal factor analyzers and their application to the assessment of chronic pain

Statistics in Medicine, 2023
Multivariate longitudinal data are used in a variety of research areas not only because they allow to analyze time trajectories of multiple indicators, but also to determine how these trajectories are influenced by other covariates. In this article, we propose a mixture of longitudinal factor analyzers.

Evolutionary optimization by distribution estimation with mixtures of factor analyzers

Proceedings of the 2002 Congress on Evolutionary Computation. CEC'02 (Cat. No.02TH8600), 2003
Evolutionary optimization algorithms based on the probability models have been studied to capture the relationship between variables in the given problems and finally to find the optimal solutions more efficiently. However, premature convergence to local optima still happens in these algorithms.

Pattern classification using a mixture of factor analyzers

Neural Networks for Signal Processing IX: Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Signal Processing Society Workshop (Cat. No.98TH8468), 2003
This paper describes a practical application of a mixture of factor analyzers (MFA) to pattern recognition. The MFA extracts locally linear manifolds underlying given high dimensional data. In this respect, the NFA-based approach is similar to the conventional subspace methods that approximate the data space with low dimensional linear subspaces ...

A Mixture of Variance-Gamma Factor Analyzers

2017
The mixture of factor analyzers model is extended to variance-gamma mixtures to facilitate flexible clustering of high-dimensional data. The formation of the variance-gamma distribution utilized is a special and limiting case of the generalized hyperbolic distribution.
