Combining classification trees using MLE
Statistics in Medicine, 1999We propose a probability distribution for an equivalence class of classification trees (that is, those that ignore the value of the cutpoints but retain tree structure). This distribution is parameterized by a central tree structure representing the true model, and a precision or concentration coefficient representing the variability around the central

Over the past three decades, much research has been devoted to the effects of peer-assisted learning (PAL) on the social, behavioral, affective, and cognitive development of learning peers (Topping & Ehly, 1998; O’Donnell & King, 1999; Rekrut, 1994; Topping, 2001, 2010; Topping et al., 2013).

Possible superiority of the conditional MLE over the unconditional MLE
Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 1989The possibility that the conditional maximum likelihood estimator (CMLE) is superior to the unconditional maximum likelihood estimator (UMLE) is discussed in examples where the residual likelihood is obstructive. We observe relatively smaller risks of the CMLE for a finite sample size.

EBD-MLE: Enabling Block Dynamics under BL-MLE for Ubiquitous Data
2017 IEEE International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing with Applications and 2017 IEEE International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Communications (ISPA/IUCC), 2017Ubiquitous devices exchange and store data at all times and places under a pervasive environment. Using cloud storage to manage these data is cost-effective. However, ubiquitous data suffers from efficiency, privacy, and functionality issues. BL-MLE is an ideal tool for encrypting user data while enabling block-level deduplication for storage saving ...

Previous research on sibling dyads in typically developing (TD) children has found that siblings may serve as an important factor influencing one another’s cognitive development (e.g., Abramovitch et al., 1986; Dunn et al., 1994; Klein et al., 2002, 2003; Knott et al., 1995, 2007; McAlister & Peterson, 2013; Pepler et al., 1981; Tzuriel & Hanuka-Levy ...

The government has set a target for all schools to introduce an integrated learning and management system by 2010. So what should senior management teams be thinking about as they plan for the next generation of education? Michael Murdock offers his view

Regular mles for nonregular distributions
Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 1999Distributions whose extremity values of the support depend on unknown pa¬rameters are usually known as nonregular distributions. In most cases, the MLEs for these parameters cannot be obtained by differentiation. Familiar examples are the uniform distribution on the interval (0,0) and the truncated exponential distribution with truncation parameter 0 ...
