Modeling of MMC-HVDC for grid integration applications

2017 IEEE Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC), 2017
The large number of constitutive elements of modular multilevel converters requires a complex model for control and modulation simulation which usually requires a small step time in the range of microseconds. However, to study the interaction of the MMC-HVDC station with the electrical DC and AC systems, which dynamical response is in the range of ...

Parameter Designing of DC Reactor for MMC-HVDC

12th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2016), 2016
A method to Design the DC reactor is proposed for modular multilevel converter based high voltage direct current(MMCHVDC). Firstly, the maximal current value allowed in an arm was acquired base on the parameters of the valve. Secondly, the maximal value of fault current when a DC pole-to-pole fault was happening was calculated.

Low voltage fault ride through control in MMC-HVDC

2017 IEEE 26th International Symposium on Industrial Electronics (ISIE), 2017
Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are the latest converter topology for the high voltage high power applications like the high voltage dc (HVDC) transmission. This paper presents the response of an MMC-HVDC converter during grid faults. Recent grid code requirements specify reactive current injection during low voltage fault conditions and negative ...

Control of transformerless MMC-HVDC during asymmetric grid faults

IECON 2013 - 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2013
Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is the latest converter topology suitable for the transformerless applications in HVDC transmission. HVDC systems are required to remain connected during grid faults, provide grid support and completely decouple the healthy side from the faulty one.

Impact of Superconducting Resistive-FCL on MMC-HVDC Fault

2021 IEEE 12th Energy Conversion Congress & Exposition - Asia (ECCE-Asia), 2021
To meet with the growing demand for energy, Renewable energy transmission is feasible with Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). Although, the chances of short-circuit fault in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems is prevalent. This large fault current could endanger the electrical integrity of the system leading to overheating and collapse of the ...

On implementation of primary frequency control in MMC-HVDC transmission systems

2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe), 2017
This paper investigates methodologies for the utilization of modular multilevel HVDC transmission (MMC-HVDC) for primary frequency control. In contrast to conventionally used average voltage source converter (VSC) models for frequency support system studies, advanced MMC models provide a different dynamic behaviour due to their decoupled ac and dc ...

Control of MMC-HVDC transmission system operating with local variables

2014 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on Industrial Electronics (ISIE), 2014
The search for new energy sources has lead to the installation of renewable energy plants located far away from the centers of consumption. In this scenario, the transmission of electrical energy over long distances has become a key issue and high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission systems have demonstrated to be the best cost effective solution. Among the

IMC based circulating current controller for MMC-HVDC

2017 36th Chinese Control Conference (CCC), 2017
The working performance of modular multilevel converters (MMC) is directly affected by the circulating current. This paper presents a circulating current suppressing technique based on internal model control (IMC) applied in conventional NLM modulation scheme and double loop upper control hierarchy. According to the instantaneous energy balance between

Control strategies of MMC-HVDC connected to passive networks

2013 IEEE International Conference of IEEE Region 10 (TENCON 2013), 2013
This paper introduces the structure and operational mechanism of Modular Multilevel Converter-High Voltage Direct Current (MMC-HVDC) and the mathematical model for the MMC-HVDC system in d-q synchronous reference frame is developed. When supplying power to passive networks, the MMC-HVDC controller at the passive network side, which contains a novel ...
