Dendrochronology and remote sensing reveal beaver occupancy and colonization dynamics in an expanding Arctic population

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The North American beaver (Castor canadensis) is expanding its distribution in the Arctic tundra. Due to the species' capacity to engineer ecosystems, they can transform surface water dynamics and biogeochemistry, permafrost stability, vegetation composition, and impact Indigenous subsistence practices.

Quantifying river morphological changes using multi‐satellite observations and in situ measurements

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 3, March 2026.
This study integrates optical, radar and altimetry satellite data with river gauge measurements to estimate periodically submerged riverbed topography and quantify morphological change. By linking how often water covers the riverbed with water‐level variations, erosion and deposition patterns are mapped across a reach of Jamuna River.

Spectral analysis of suspended solids in inland waters with presence of mining activities: Sipí river case study, the colombian Pacific [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
La minería es uno de las actividades que presenta gran afectación en el medio ambiente, en nuestro país es uno de los fenómenos que ha venido en aumento en zonas donde no hay una presencia integral del estado lo que ha llevado al crecimiento de esta ...

A novel framework for analysing river planform characteristics in data‐scarce regions using remote sensing data

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 3, March 2026.
Using a three‐step framework of data preprocessing, analysis and interpretation, we provide insights into the seasonal and annual pattern of morphological changes, the overall bed form and dynamics and the location of morphological uniform river sections to assess the current morphological river state in data‐scarce regions.

Seasonal Variations of the Relationship between Spectral Indexes and Land Surface Temperature Based on Local Climate Zones: A Study in Three Yangtze River Megacities

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
Urban heat islands are representative problems in urban environments. The impact of spectral indexes on land-surface temperature (LST) under different urban forms, climates, and functions is not fully understood.

Evaluation of NDWI and MNDWI for assessment of waterlogging by integrating digital elevation model and groundwater level

open access: yesGeocarto International, 2014
Accurate information on the extent of waterlogging is required for flood prediction, monitoring, relief and preventive measures. The rule-based classification algorithms were used for differentiating waterlogged areas from other ground features using Resourcesat-2 AWiFS satellite imagery (Indian Remote Sensing Satellite with spatial resolution of 56 m).

Assessment of the Spatiotemporal Patterns and Ecological Impacts of Photovoltaic Power Plants in Central Asia

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Photovoltaic (PV) power plants rapidly expand in drylands because of the high solar potential and efficient land‐use capabilities. However, existing PV data sets are often incomplete and lack installation timestamps, which significantly hinder comprehensive assessments of PV power plants' ecological impacts. By integrating a random forest (RF)
