The reaction system of luminescence in Mnemiopsis.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1923
In dark adapted Mnemiopsis luminescence occurs upon stimulation such as gentle agitation of the vessel containing the animal. If agitation is continued the light keeps up for a few seconds and then ceases. After a few minutes' rest the reaction may be obtained again. If rested animals are exposed to light of sufficient intensity and duration they cease

Biological invasions: a global assessment of geographic distributions, long‐term trends, and data gaps

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2542-2583, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Biological invasions are one of the major drivers of biodiversity decline and have been shown to have far‐reaching consequences for society and the economy. Preventing the introduction and spread of alien species represents the most effective solution to reducing their impacts on nature and human well‐being.

Assessing Biodiversity at Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) Aquaculture and Reef Sites Utilizing Real‐Time Monitoring and Environmental DNA in Rehoboth Bay, Delaware, USA

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 11, November 2025.
Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are a keystone species and vital to the commercial shellfish industry, acting as environmental engineers that enhance biodiversity. To study their impact, real‐time monitoring and Environmental DNA analysis were conducted at various sites in Rehoboth Bay, Delaware and 23 species were identified, with Spot ...

The invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi poses no direct threat to Baltic cod eggs and larvae

open access: yes, 2011
Since its invasion in to the Baltic Sea in 2006, the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi has been suspected of seriouspredation on the early life stages of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua callarias L.) due to a temporal and spatial overlap inthe most important cod ...

The locus of the action of veratrin in Mnemiopsis.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1923
Specimens of Mnemiopsis immersed in a solution of veratrin (1 : 1345) in sea water show immediate inhibition of beats of the swimming plates, these stopping in the upright position. If, now, single plates or groups of plates be isolated from a specimen, in two minutes these begin beating and continue to do so for half an hour or longer in the solution ...

Diverse RNA interference strategies in early-branching metazoans

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2018
Background Micro RNAs (miRNAs) and piwi interacting RNAs (piRNAs), along with the more ancient eukaryotic endogenous small interfering RNAs (endo-siRNAs) constitute the principal components of the RNA interference (RNAi) repertoire of most animals.

Biomass‐to‐volume ratio as a central continuous functional trait for marine zooplankton

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue 9, Page 2673-2687, September 2025.
Abstract Gelatinous zooplankton are an important component of many ecosystems and important for ecosystem structure and carbon cycling. However, this group is generally not considered in biogeochemical models. Here we investigate the biomass‐to‐volume ratio as an underappreciated “master trait” that allows for the incorporation of a large diversity of ...

Connectivity and Population Structure in a Marginal Sea—A Review

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 7, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim The current biodiversity crisis calls for conservation measures that limit or reduce the negative human impact on key habitats and vulnerable wild populations. To effectively protect biodiversity at all levels, including intra‐specific diversity, conservation measures should, ideally, be aligned with the connectivity and genetic structure ...
