Modal Truncation in Experimental Modal Analysis
2018Some methods in experimental modal analysis rely on a finite set of modes and they neglect the higher modes. However, this approach causes a truncation of the modal decomposition and the modal truncation introduces errors of unknown magnitude. In this paper the effect of modal truncation is investigated on a test specimen in the laboratory. It is found

Remarks on Modalization and Modalities
1991“Modalization and Modalities” needs no criticism as a careful recounting of Husserl’s genetic analyses of disjunction and negation. If the paper has a weakness, it is in the presentation of the tradition and situation of modal logic and its semantics (as opposed to classical logic and its semantics) in relation to these Husserlian doctrines.

The Evolution of Grammar: Tense, Aspect, and Modality in the Languages of the World
, 1994Joan Bybee and her colleagues present a new theory of the evolution of grammar that links structure and meaning in a way that directly challenges most contemporary versions of generative grammar.

Modal adverbs and modality scales
Lingua, 1987Abstract The aim of this paper is to describe the linguistic function of modal adverbs in natural languages. First, I shall introduce the concept of operator, as it should be defined within the framework of GB of TGG. At LF an operator is a function which, from a specific syntactic position, modifies a set of properties, and this information is going

Modal Synthesis Modal Correction — Modal Coupling
1982Modal synthesis is a technical term closely related to the development of the finite element technique. Especially in dealing with large structural systems with some thousand physical degrees of freedom, modal synthesis has proved to be an efficient means to reduce computational errors and to minimize computer costs by decomposing the system into ...

Modal Rationalism and Modal Monism [PDF]
Modal rationalism includes the thesis that ideal primary positive conceivability entails primary possibility. Modal monism is the thesis that the space of logically possible worlds is coextensive with the space of metaphysically possible worlds. In this paper I explore the relation between the two theses.

A Modal Analysis of Presupposition and Modal Subordination [PDF]
In this paper I will give a modal two-dimensional analysis of presupposition and modal subordination. I will think of presupposition as a non-veridical propositional attitude. This allows me to evaluate what is presupposed and what is asserted at different dimensions without getting into the binding problem.

The superposition of acoustical modes radiated from a transducer can provide directionality from a compact projector. This paper presents the foundation, as well as examples, of piezoelectric ceramic, piezoelectric single crystal, and magnetostrictive versions of this “modal projector.” Measured and analytical, as well as finite element analysis ...

Modal Concord as Modal Modification
2010Modal concord is the phenomenon by which certain modal adverbs seem to become semantically vacuous in the presence of modal auxiliaries if the adverb and the auxiliary match in quantificational force (e.g., universal vs existential) and modal flavor (e.g., epistemic vs deontic). We propose that neither concord adverbs nor modal auxiliaries are vacuous:

2001
The modal systems described in the last two chapters share a number of features, not only in the systems themselves, but also, for many languages, in the use of modal verbs and the association with possibility and necessity. A detailed discussion of these has been left to this chapter in order to avoid too much repetition and cross-referencing.
